What to Expect The BIW Quality Technician is primarily responsible for ensuring Body in White (BIW) parts meet customer and internal quality requirements by monitoring welding processes, performing inspections, and conducting destructive and non‑destructive testing. This role is crucial in troubleshooting issues, implementing corrective actions, and maintaining high standards of quality and safety to support the successful launch of the newest Energy products and sub‑components, from engineering design to mass production.

This role will be based out of the Greater Houston Area (TX) however will be expected to work in Lathrop (CA) to support prototype builds and validation for the first 1-2 months. Other travel may be required. Travel plans and reimbursement will follow Tesla's Travel Policy and will be governed by the direct manager.

What You'll Do

The BIW Quality Technician will be responsible for conducting random floor audits of production parts, SPC charts, and checking fixtures to ensure quality levels are maintained or improved, with clear accountability for reporting findings to engineering and production leads

This person is expected to perform destructive testing (e.g., using plasma cutters, air chisels) and non‑destructive testing (NDT) using ultrasonic inspection equipment to analyze weld data and ensure structural integrity, while self‑validating work for accuracy, checking the quality of previous operations, and meeting critical deadlines

The BIW Quality Technician shall have the capacity to initiate problem reports, assist in root cause determination for process or product failures, recommend necessary adjustments to parts or machinery, and verbally provide constructive feedback, define/iterate/document standard work, and suggest process improvements, with ownership for updating and auditing weld documentation

The BIW Quality Technician will also support field investigations, instrumented/non-Plan of Record builds, and unique projects in support of our cross‑functional teams, including working closely with production teams, engineers, and vendors to resolve welding concerns and provide technical expertise to the welding lab

This role includes hands‑on product build validation, collaboration with cross‑functional teams to ensure factory and line readiness as well as ensuring critical timelines are met through effective execution of key milestones, such as assisting in training production personnel on weld quality requirements and new procedures

Support Operations and Projects on the production line as necessary, while ensuring all activities comply with relevant Quality, Health, Safety, and Environmental programs

What You'll Bring

Associate's Degree in Welding Technology or equivalent technical certificate or equivalent experience in a manufacturing/industrial environment, particularly within BIW settings

Must have a high level of craftsmanship and attention to detail, while working in an environment that requires quick action, with relevant manufacturing and automotive experience, especially in GMAW (MIG), RSW (resistance spot welding), and structural adhesives applications

Knowledge in Fanuc Robot, WTC Weld Controller, Lincoln power source - Power Wave (Desirable); proficiency in using precision measurement tools like height gauges, Verniers, and micrometers; ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, specifications, and engineering drawings; knowledge of NDT (Level I UT certification may be required) and weld destruct procedures

Communicates test results, ideas, and problems to supervisor and engineers; able to be part of the solution, with strong problem‑solving, critical thinking, and communication skills, along with the ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced team environment and manage multiple priorities

Typically involves a variety of operations (including troubleshooting and rework) requiring a sufficient understanding of the functional operation of the items assembled as well as the finished product, including generating reports from weld data analysis and maintaining records of inspections and supplier performance

Skilled in troubleshooting electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems, with computer skills for data entry and report generation

Skilled with the use of a variety of hand and portable tools

Essential Physical Demands

Ability to perform physically demanding work for extended periods of time, up to 12 hours a day

Ability to stand and walk for up to 12 hours/day, including over varied and uneven terrain

Frequently and repetitively, lift, push and carry up to 35 lbs., including the ability to carry 20 lbs. up and down stairs

Frequently and repetitively, bend, lift and reach to install parts

Stoop, lay, bend, reach, squat, kneel, crouch, twist and crawl for extended periods of time, including up to 12 hours/day

Climb and maintain balance on ladders, scaffolding or other high structures

Ability to find issues in a work process and receive safety signals using sight, touch, and hearing

Wearing Personal Protective Equipment, including but not limited to: safety glasses, safety shoes, bump caps, arm protection, and adhering to prescribed safety rules and guidelines
