Overview The Unit Secretary Equipment Technician acts as a patient experience ambassador, facilitating a positive experience for patients, families, visitors and physicians. The role also performs clerical support for the unit and Nurse Manager and maintains equipment within the high‑risk nursery.

Responsibilities

Represents the unit and Hackensack Meridian Health as a Patient Experience Ambassador.

Ensures that patient belongings are secured and labeled.

Answers telephone calls in a courteous and professional manner.

Greets visitors on the unit and provides directional assistance.

Answers call bells and assists with non‑clinical requests.

Completes hand‑washing audits.

Assists with FaceTime calls to family and language line services.

Interacts with the team to resolve equipment issues, including nurses, physicians, and the operations manager.

Performs daily, weekly, and monthly audits of assigned equipment and patient rooms.

Checks inventory of assigned procedure carts and restocks as needed.

Serves as liaison with Bio‑Med, Sterile Processing, Materials Management, and Plant Operations departments.

Delivers and picks up equipment and supplies from Sterile Processing promptly.

Tracks equipment that is out for repair and follows up routinely.

Recognizes and responds to opportunities to enhance patient satisfaction.

Performs other duties and/or projects as assigned.

Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Environment of Care Rounding

Stocks Personal Protective Equipment.

Stocks blanket warmers and gloves.

Rounds on unit and reports unit conditions and hazards in EPIC and OneLink.

Responsible for rental bed ordering.

Manages all equipment sent out for service.

Assists nursing staff with obtaining necessary equipment and supplies for patient care (e.g., isolette, phototherapy lights, etc.).

Assists nursing staff with washing of patient care items (e.g., cloths, blankets, chair inserts, etc.).

Clerical Duties

Maintains and orders office supplies and forms.

Manages POLST‑FAX advanced directive and POLST.

Chart maintenance, including preparation of admission and transport paperwork.

Assists in the preparation and distribution of PKU newborn screenings and results.

Distributes medication to the RN which is sent via tube.

Acts as a runner to the lab, blood bank, and pharmacy.

Physical Demands

Long periods of sitting with frequent standing, walking, or moving.

Requires periods of keying on the computer terminal to input information.

Requires constant verbal communication in person or using the phone.

Exposure to communicable diseases.

Extended wearing of PPE.

Application of surgical mask for long periods of time.

Lifts a minimum of 5 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 5 lbs. and stands a minimum of 1 hour a day.

Other – Schedule Requirements

Required to work every other weekend according to department needs.

Required to work three (3) out of (6) holidays according to department needs.

Required to work rotating schedules/shifts based on needs.

Qualifications

High School diploma or equivalent.

Proficient computer skills.

Strong organizational skills and detail orientation to facilitate information, multiple tasks, and accurate completion of all required procedures.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Proficient computer skills including but not limited to Microsoft Office and Google Suite platforms.

Preferred Education and Experience

2 years of experience in front desk, reception, or customer service.

Proficiency in a second language.
