Bonuses

Up to a $25,000 bonus for new state service nurses who remain with the facility for 2 years.

A $15,000 sign‑on bonus will be awarded to new hires entering state service, with a one‑year written agreement required.

An additional $10,000 retention bonus will be awarded to hires after December 10, 2023. The bonus is paid one year after hire date and requires a one‑year written agreement.

The Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) supports individuals by promoting recovery, self‑determination, and wellness in all aspects of life. DBHDS operates 12 facilities: 8 behavioral health facilities for adults, a training center, a psychiatric facility for children and adolescents, a medical center, and a center for behavioral rehabilitation. State facilities provide highly structured, intensive services for individuals with mental illness, intellectual disability, or a need for substance use disorder services. DBHDS is committed to a life of possibilities for all Virginians.

This position will work at Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute, a 72‑bed Joint Commission accredited State Mental Health Facility in Danville, VA.

A

Registered Nurse II

at DBHDS is responsible for providing advanced nursing care for patients with psychiatric disorders in accordance with hospital policies and procedures, nursing standards, and regulations.

Registered Nurses are also responsible for safely implementing the use of seclusion/ restraints, including knowledge of physical and emotional risk factors of the patients served at the facility.

Positions are available for our night shift (7:00 pm – 7:30 am) RN float pool and will work 12‑hour shifts in a non‑rotating Pitman schedule. The position may require overtime and will work weekends on a rotating basis.

Orientation

This position requires completion of a consecutive 4‑week New Employee Orientation for on‑the‑job training. Orientation hours are from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm with a one‑hour lunch break during Week 1 and then as scheduled by the Nurse Educator for Weeks 2–4, which will include some night shift.

Minimum Qualifications • Experience working as a Registered Nurse.

• Current and in good standing Registered Nurse license to practice nursing in the Commonwealth of Virginia, or license eligible; multi‑state compact endorsement is accepted.

• Valid driver’s license that remains valid and in good standing throughout employment.

• Knowledge of the theory and practice of nursing and psychiatric nursing.

• Knowledge and skills related to psychosocial rehabilitation/recovery models.

• Successful completion of BLS, Therapeutic Options (TO), and other required training upon employment at the facility.

• Effective interpersonal communication skills, team‑focused care and professional approach.

• Ability to plan, implement, and evaluate care utilizing knowledge of pharmacology, psychiatric and physical disorders, and cultural needs of the individual psychiatric patient.

• Good clinical knowledge and the ability to serve as a resource to staff.

• Experience/ability to delegate, supervise, evaluate nursing processes to help solve complex problems.

• Responsible for safely implementing the use of seclusion/ restraints, including knowledge of physical and emotional risk factors of the patients served.

Additional Considerations • Experience as a Registered Nurse in a psychiatric, acute care, long‑term, or correctional setting.

• Veterans and individuals with National Service experience.

• Bilingual fluency in Spanish and English.
