Rehabilitation Technician 1 Are you someone who enjoys helping people get oriented, feel welcome, and take their next step with confidence? The Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) is hiring a Rehabilitation Technician 1 to support people with disabilities as they work toward meaningful employment.

In this role, you are often the first connection people have with DVR. Your work helps set the tone for their experience — answering questions, explaining what to expect, and making sure nothing falls through the cracks. Working alongside Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors, you play an important part in keeping cases moving forward and services on track.

This is a career for someone who enjoys a mix of people-facing work and behind-the-scenes coordination. If you like staying organized, communicating clearly, and knowing your work directly supports others in reaching their goals, this position offers that every day.

Pierce County employees are eligible to receive an Orca Card for transportation needs.

Some of what you'll do:

Welcome visitors and support front desk operations by answering phones, managing lobby sign-ins, handling mail and referrals, and keeping the reception area running smoothly.

Explain DVR services and eligibility requirements in clear, straightforward language and enter new applications into the case management system within required timeframes.

Support Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors by gathering documentation, requesting vendor quotes, staying in touch with participants, and noting progress or barriers that may affect employment goals.

Schedule interpreters, service providers, and meetings; collect diagnostic information; and flag delays that could impact eligibility timelines.

Review and monitor authorizations, prepare or process payments, and complete required case reviews before closure.

Keep electronic and paper records accurate, organized, and in line with agency policies and records retention requirements.

Additional knowledge, skills and abilities we're looking for:

Knowledge of community resources: Using familiarity with local supports and service providers to help connect people to appropriate resources that support employment and vocational rehabilitation goals.

Understanding of disability-related needs: Communicating respectfully and effectively with people who may experience physical, cognitive, mental health, or communication barriers, while supporting an inclusive and welcoming office environment.

Clear communication and relationship-building skills: Working collaboratively with vocational rehabilitation counselors, service providers, and vendors, while maintaining consistent and professional communication with the people you support.

Technical and systems skills: Learning and using case management and office systems to enter applications, track documentation, monitor authorizations, and maintain accurate case records.

Interviewing and explanation skills: Gathering information, asking clarifying questions, and explaining DVR services, eligibility requirements, and next steps in a way that is understandable and reassuring.

Professional judgment and problem-solving: Navigating questions, delays, or challenging situations with patience and consistency, and knowing when to elevate issues that may affect timelines or service delivery.

Who should apply? Individuals with two years of college-level coursework AND at least one year of experience providing direct customer service in a non-retail setting.

OR

A combination of education and relevant experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the work may substitute for the required qualifications.
