Property Appraiser 1 (25143068) Mission Statement: To be the nation’s most citizen oriented, efficiently administered, state tax agency.

Office: Montana Department of Revenue – Property Assessment Division.

Duties

Conduct residential property reviews and discoveries to identify appraisal needs.

Review tax records, land use, improvements, and valuation documents.

Research and analyze individual residential property characteristics and determine final property value.

Examine site and improvement data, zoning, planning, covenants, and deed restrictions.

Compile and analyze construction cost data to determine effects on property values.

Conduct field appraisals and site inspections of subject properties.

Perform comparable sales to identify valuation factors.

Document professional assumptions and limiting conditions.

Determine the primary use for appraised properties and appropriate appraisal method.

Verify information in title, ownership data, and market models.

Qualifications

Minimum 2 years of post‑secondary education in business, accounting, economics, public administration, construction technology, or related field.

Minimum 1 year of job‐related experience, preferably in property appraisal, assessment, or auditing.

Montana certification in residential property appraisal (IAAO 101) required within the first year of employment.

Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice training (USPAP) required.

Strong research, analysis, attention to detail, and communication skills.

Basic computer skills.
