Overview

The Controller will lead the accounting and finance department of our affiliate property management and services company. The Controller is responsible for managing the daily accounting operations for a complex real estate portfolio that includes retail, light industrial, office, residential single family, and residential multifamily properties. The Controller ensures accuracy, compliance, and timely reporting. This role requires a detail-driven accounting professional with substantial real estate experience (Senior Staff Accountant level and above) who understands the nuances by property type, such as common area maintenance (CAM) reconciliations for commercial real estate, and can analyze financials and translate them into actionable insights. Responsibilities

Oversee financial reporting and statements. Manage accounting operations including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll allocations and billbacks, and the general ledger. Develop budgets and forecasts for properties and ensure compliance with real estate laws, tax regulations, GAAP, and internal controls; coordinate with auditors as needed. Handle cash management and real estate-specific accounting tasks such as property transactions. Lead accounting teams and communicate financial information to stakeholders. Develop financial packages, document and implement policies, mentor accounting staff, and ensure processes and reconciliations tell the story behind the numbers. Bachelor’s degree or higher in Accounting, Finance, or related field. CPA preferred, not required. 10+ years of progressive accounting experience in both multifamily and commercial sectors, including prior Senior Staff Accountant responsibilities. Experience in Yardi (Preference for Expert Level). High attention to detail with a "pennies matter" mentality. Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills. Ability to lead, mentor, and coach accounting staff; capable of working independently and proactively resolving issues. Accuracy & Detail Orientation – High standards for financial precision.
