Position Summary St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Kansas City, Missouri is seeking to fill the role of Gym Coordinator. The role is responsible for overseeing gym operations during weekend athletic events while games are in session. This role ensures a safe, organized, and welcoming environment for students, families, visiting teams, officials, and spectators. The Weekend Gym Coordinator supports athletic programming and game-day logistics while upholding the mission, values, and teachings of the Catholic Church.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Game-Day Operations
Open, prepare, and secure the gymnasium and related spaces before and after scheduled games.
Set up and break down athletic equipment, seating, scoreboards, sound systems, and signage as needed.
Ensure the gym is clean, organized, and properly configured throughout events.
Monitor temperature, lighting, and sound levels to maintain a safe and comfortable environment.
Supervision & Safety
Serve as the primary on-site supervisor for the gym while games are in session.
Ensure compliance with school safety policies, diocesan guidelines, and athletic league rules.
Monitor crowd behavior and enforce school expectations for conduct and sportsmanship.
Respond to minor incidents and contact administration, emergency services, or maintenance as needed.
Maintain familiarity with emergency procedures and evacuation plans.
Coordination & Communication
Serve as the point of contact for coaches, referees, visiting teams, volunteers, and staff during events.
Coordinate access to locker rooms, storage areas, and equipment.
Communicate schedule changes or facility issues promptly to the Athletic Director.
Ensure gym usage aligns with approved schedules and policies.
Hospitality & Stewardship
Welcome visiting teams, officials, and families in a courteous and professional manner.
Promote a respectful, faith-centered atmosphere that reflects Catholic values.
Ensure school property and athletic equipment are used appropriately and respectfully.
Closing Responsibilities
Confirm all participants and spectators have exited the facility.
Secure equipment, storage areas, and doors following events.
Conduct a brief post-event walkthrough and report any issues, damages, or incidents.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent
Practicing Catholic in good standing is preferred, but not required.
Availability for weekend hours during athletic seasons
Strong organizational, interpersonal, and problem‑solving skills
Ability to supervise facilities and manage multiple priorities in a live event setting
Physical ability to set up, move, and store athletic equipment
Experience in athletic event management, facility supervision, or school/parish settings
CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain)
Familiarity with youth sports leagues and game-day operations
Work Environment
Weekend work, including early mornings and evenings; hours vary based on game schedule
Indoor gym environment with moderate noise levels
Standing and walking for extended periods; occasional lifting
