The National Trust for Historic Preservation invites applications for the 2025-2026 Silman Fellow for Preservation Engineering. This 12-month fellowship provides a recent graduate with the opportunity to work on various restoration, rehabilitation, and preservation projects at the Trust’s 27 sites nationwide, and to work as part of TYLin’s Buildings Sector in-person as a structural engineer.
The Silman Fellow is required to complete a deliverable for the benefit to the field of historic preservation that is suitable for presentation and/or publication. Upon successful completion of the Fellowship, the Fellow will continue as a full-time TYLin employee.

Consultant and contractor team selection
Technical research/materials conservation methods
Preventive and corrective maintenance
Contract document practices
Bidding and negotiation practices
Job site administration practices
Responsibilities at TYLin
Work with the project team to prepare structural design and drawings for buildings (commercial, institutional, residential) from conceptual and preliminary stages of design through to completion.
Perform field review for projects under construction.
Other responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
B.S. in Civil, Architectural, or Structural Engineering
M.S. or M.A. in Historic Preservation or M.S. in Structural or Architectural Engineering with an academic background in historic preservation is required
Willingness and ability to travel nationwide
Demonstrated professional interest in historic preservation
Client focused, always striving to give clients the best solutions
Strong commitment to innovation by creating new and better ways to solve clients’ toughest challenges
High levels of integrity, always doing the right thing in an ethical, fair, and sustainable way
Demonstrated experience of collaboration in a diverse and inclusive team, working together toward technical excellence
