Transportation Engineering Specialist 1

(TDOT Graduate Transportation Engineer Program) role. This position offers a competitive monthly salary of $5,647.00 - $7,326.00 and an annual salary of $67,764.00 - $87,912.00. Applicants will work full‑time and will be assigned to one of the following locations:

Nashville, TN

McEwen, TN

Columbia, TN

Lewisburg, TN

Lawrenceburg, TN

Murfreesboro, TN

Program Details These positions participate in TDOT's Graduate Transportation Engineer (GTE) Program, starting June 2026. Training rotations occur primarily in Nashville regardless of initial assignment. For more information, view

Qualifications

Transportation Engineering Specialist 1:

Bachelor’s or master’s degree in engineering, construction project management, or concrete industry management.

Transportation Engineering Specialist 2:

Bachelor’s or master’s degree in engineering, construction project management, or concrete industry management and 1 year of demonstrated competency in planning, developing, and/or constructing projects.

Transportation Engineering Specialist 3:

Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of demonstrated competency, or master’s degree and 1 year of demonstrated competency.

Transportation Engineering Specialist 4:

Bachelor’s degree and 3 years of demonstrated competency, or master’s degree and 2 years of demonstrated competency.

Responsibilities

Understand and apply engineering techniques, procedures, and design criteria in accordance with technical manuals.

Work to understand key components of technical disciplines within the Project Delivery Network (PDN).

Utilize various software platforms in designing and maintaining transportation systems.

Ensure quality of work product meets or exceeds standards.

Assist with implementing proactive solutions for engineering concerns.

Collaborate and communicate with project team and internal stakeholders.

Submit updates to schedules and document project progress.

Identify infrastructure issues for maintenance, repair, safety, environmental, and operational needs.

Plan, develop, and assemble transportation infrastructure plans with latest CADD technology.

Additional Duties For Engineering Specialist II & III

Complete project deliverables in planning, design, and construction phases.

Identify issues that might impact critical path work items on complex projects.

Design and graphically depict project components using department specifications.

Identify design conflicts and propose solutions while maintaining scope, schedule, and budget.

Implement design criteria with a context-sensitive approach to complex projects.

Additional Duties For Engineering Specialist IV

Provide technical guidance, training, and mentorship to others.

Develop innovative processes and design elements to improve efficiency and safety.
