Paramedic Responsibilities The Paramedic provides and documents individualized patient care to include patient and personal safety, patient assessments in collaboration with the supervising RN or RT, patient re‑assessments, triage, maintaining airway patency, IV access and hanging IV fluids without additives, ECG interpretations, dysrhythmias recognition, placement of patients on defined oxygen delivering devices and assistance with the application of skeletal traction, splints, immobilizers and other orthopedic equipment under the supervision of a Licensed Physician.

Essential Functions

Delivers patient care requiring advanced skills and judgment in the Emergency Department, Critical Care or Respiratory Department settings as directed by the appropriate Medical Director for specialty to include protocol orders or guidelines within approved current paramedic competency.

The competency will not exceed the educational guidelines for a paramedic in the State of Florida.

The Florida paramedic practice model includes invasive and pharmacologic interventions intended to reduce morbidity and mortality in the pre‑hospital environment.

It is expected that in the hospital setting where medical care and resources are readily available, this practice model will be modified.

Communicates appropriate information regarding the patient’s condition to the Registered Nurse, Respiratory Therapist, and ED or Critical Care, Pulmonary providers or their designee and documents findings of care provided according to established guidelines.

Provides for the physical comfort and safety of patients, visitors, and members of the health care team including infection control and appropriate handling of hazardous materials.

Prioritizes and sequences work activities and delivery of medical care to patients that ensures the patient’s comfort, safety, and progress toward established goals.

Administers limited medications safely within the defined education guidelines and competencies.

Facilitates patient movement within the department and through the facility, proactively supporting timely admissions, discharges, and transfers.

Qualifications Education/Training:

Successfully completed a Paramedic program.

Licensure/Certification:

Current certification as a Paramedic (PMD) in the State of Florida renewed every 2 years; maintains current BLS/Healthcare provider certification; maintains current ACLS certification; and if appropriate, obtains and maintains PALS certification within one year of hire.
