Purpose The purpose of a Trauma Systems Therapy (TST) Therapist in the Preventive Services Department is to provide the TST model for families with children (ages 5 and over) who are impacted by trauma and may be at risk for foster care placement. The department offers child welfare services using evidence‑based models to ensure families can create safe environments, keep children safe in homes, and reduce the need for foster care.

Position Overview The Therapist works with families to assess needs, develop intervention plans, and deliver individualized therapy sessions in the family’s home and community. They collaborate with other service providers, monitor progress, adjust treatment plans, and work toward successful case closures.

Key Essential Functions

Provide child welfare preventive services in the client’s home and community.

Learn and implement the TST model.

Improve caregiver‑child relationships to restore child functioning.

Integrate case management services with an evidence‑based model to meet basic family needs.

Collaborate and coordinate services with all providers working with the family.

Identify and evaluate risk.

Conduct assessments: review referrals, engage key participants, identify and weaknesses, develop goals.

Engage caregivers and key participants in active, change‑oriented treatment.

Adhere to the fidelity of the model regarding treatment length, contacts, interventions, supervision, and documentation.

Participate in consultations with the model developer; audio/video record sessions for training and supervision.

Maintain clear documentation in the CNNX case record, including progress notes, Family Services Assessment Plans, data entry into PROMIS, and reports to Probation as required.

Work a hybrid, flexible schedule based on program needs.

Engage in supervision and professional development to improve model adherence.

Outreach to generate program referrals.

Collaborate with a team to meet client, program, and division needs.

Perform additional tasks as assigned.

Core Competencies

Basic social work knowledge and understanding of stages of change.

Ability to provide in‑home therapy and child welfare services.

Ability to establish a strong therapeutic relationship with families.

Understanding of family therapy principles.

Knowledge of early childhood development and related theories.

Strong assessment skills to evaluate family dynamics.

Ability to implement strategies to improve family communication and support.

Educational / Training Required

Master’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Mental Health Counseling, Marriage and Family Therapy, Creative Arts Therapy, or a related field.

Experience Required / Language Preference

Bilingual/Bicultural preferred.

Experience working in the client’s home.

Experience in Child Welfare, JJI, or adolescent‑focused programs.

Knowledge of evidence‑based models, motivational interviewing, solution‑focused work; experience working with diverse communities.

Direct practice with families.

Computer Skills Required

Knowledge of Microsoft Office.

Experience with the Connections system preferred.

Work Environment / Physical Effort \ Travel within New York City transporting equipment up to ~10 pounds.

Risks include traveling in NYC and interacting with clients in acute mental‑health crises.

Position is currently hybrid but may become fully in‑person.
