Summary / Purpose The Student Technician I reports to the Nurse Manager. Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Student Tech I performs multi-skilled activities to support a decentralized patient-centered approach to patient care and achieve desired outcomes.

Minimum Training and Education Currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program and has successfully completed a Nursing Fundamentals Course. Enrollment in nursing school is verified as part of background process. Transcript or letter from college may be requested prior to employment. Possess ability to understand and implement a variety of detailed instructions in the execution of therapeutic procedures and ability to make accurate physical observation of patients. Applicant must communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Basic computer skills required. Position may require working irregular hours under stressful conditions, rotating shifts, holidays and weekends. Within two months of date of hire, employees must successfully pass the online course modules and skills validation for basic skills. Passing requires achieving an 80% passing rate in two attempts or will result in separation from employment. Trainees are expected to have reliable attendance, are responsible for maintaining their BLS and any other annual competencies. Failure to abide by MUHA policies are subject to disciplinary action, including termination.

Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations Basic Life Support required within 2 weeks of hire. Thereafter, must maintain Current Basic Life Support (BLS), either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.

(Infrequent); exert up to 50 lbs. of force (Frequent); examples include transferring a 100 lb. patient that cannot assist in the transfer requires 50 lbs. of force; for every 100 additional pounds, assistance will be required from another healthcare worker; 20 lbs. of force is needed to push a 400 lb. patient in a wheelchair on carpet; 25 lbs. of force is required to push a stretcher with a patient with one hand. Visual and sensory requirements include: ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected, in one eye or with both eyes; see and recognize objects close at hand or at a distance; match or discriminate between colors; determine distance/relationship between objects; depth perception; good peripheral vision; hearing acuity (corrected); ability to perform gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements; deal effectively with stressful situations; work rotating shifts; work overtime as required; work in a latex-safe environment; maintain tactile sensory functions; maintain olfactory sensory function (selected positions); be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required (selected positions).
