Heavy Equipment Operator – Cortland County Department of Public Works The work involves responsibility for the operation of specialized heavy equipment used in highway repair, construction and maintenance projects and other public works activities. This position requires greater skill and responsibility for safety over the operation of motor equipment. Additionally, an incumbent may perform routine lubrication and maintenance of equipment and general laboring tasks. The work is performed outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather, under general supervision with leeway for independent judgment. The employee may supervise laborers and motor equipment operators, depending on the project.

Work Hours

Full Time, 40 hours per week with benefits

Salary

$23.74–$30.05 per hour (CSEA Union)

Minimum Qualifications

Two (2) years of experience in the operation of heavy automotive equipment or highway construction and maintenance equipment.

Special Requirements

Possession of a valid New York State Class B or Class A Driver’s License with air brake endorsement is required at time of application.

A New York State Class A Commercial Driver’s License with air brake and tank endorsement is required within twelve (12) months of appointment. Failure to obtain and/or maintain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License and all required endorsements, including driving privileges throughout employment, will result in disciplinary action or dismissal.
