Equipment Operator II - Transportation

Position Overview
Equipment Operator II (EO2) will perform a variety of tasks including general labor and the operation of medium and heavy street maintenance equipment used in the maintenance and/or construction of the City of Midland’s street and drainage infrastructure. EO2 will perform daily preventive maintenance on motorized equipment and tools. EO2 will be familiar with the City’s street and drainage assets and work without close supervision.
Responsibilities
Operate and conduct training on heavy equipment including Asphalt Distributor Truck, Compactors, Motor Grader, Paving Equipment (Asphalt/Concrete), Tractor with Haul Trailer (Class A CDL only), Track Loaders, Wheel Loader, Backhoe Loader, Jet/Vac Combination Truck, Tractor Mowers, and all other equipment as assigned.
Operate transit / level to set grade for excavating, establishing sub‑grade and setting grade pins for finish grade.
Perform routine maintenance and repair of city streets and alleys through operation of light and heavy equipment including walk‑behind saws, compactors, dump trucks, water trucks, and other equipment related to maintenance of streets and alleys.
Perform daily preventive maintenance of equipment.
Perform manual work and general labor such as making street and curb cuts.
Maintain tools and equipment.
Inspect overall safety of various job projects. Maintain safe and efficient operation of heavy equipment.
Ensure all safety equipment is being utilized daily.
Attend safety meetings monthly.
Perform pre‑trip/post‑trip vehicle/equipment inspections and complete daily worksheet for equipment operated.
Keep work location and vehicle/equipment in order, inspect and maintain assigned equipment, identify equipment needs for each assigned project.
Operate heavy equipment in clearing of streets and/or alleys during inclement weather incidents.
Operate and train on specialized heavy equipment in the absence of EO3.
Assist with proper set up of work zone traffic control.
Assist in loading and unloading transported material and equipment.
Fulfill on‑call duties as required and outlined on Transportation’s on‑call roster.
Assist with maintenance of Transportation’s building and grounds.
Assist other City divisions and departments as needed.
Perform related duties as required.
Physical Requirements Ability to sit, climb, bend, stoop, and stand while performing essential job duties. Ability to drive a vehicle to and from work sites. Exposure to seasonal temperatures while performing maintenance duties. Possibility of exposure to hazardous materials. Exposure to work zones consisting of high‑volume vehicular traffic. Must be able to lift working materials.
Minimum Education & Work Experience
High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
3 years related experience
Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
Preferred Knowledge, Abilities & Skills
Minimum of 2 years with the City of Midland. Previous experience will be considered:
3+ years related experience
2+ years experience operating heavy equipment
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
General knowledge of safety standard practices governing the operation of vehicles
Skill to operate controls for required equipment
Ability to properly use, operate and care for tools, equipment, and materials
Ability to perform routine maintenance and minor repairs to equipment
Ability to read and understand vehicle operator’s manual
Ability to read and use city maps and documentation
Licenses & Certifications
Valid Class B Texas Commercial Driver’s License (Class A preferred) with a Tanker Endorsement or the ability to obtain within six months of hire
Valid Class C Texas driver’s license
