Overview Safety Programs Coordinator responsibilities include developing training for legally mandated (Federal, State and Local) and University-specific EH&S programs/workplace safety; coordinating with Facilities Operations to schedule training; maintaining records of training and attendance; coordinating with EH&S personnel and contractors to provide subject matter expert training; and developing safety information and guidelines related to facilities safety.

Responsibilities

Develop, refine and implement training courses for legally mandated (Federal, State and Local) and University-specific needs related to EH&S programs/workplace safety.

Coordinate with Facilities Operations personnel to schedule training session times and locations for all shifts.

Maintain records of training dates, content and employee attendance.

Coordinate with other EH&S personnel and contractors to provide subject matter expert training when appropriate.

Coordinate and/or assist with SME props/training for individual shops.

Develop practical mock-ups or site visits to work locations and verify that employees have understood and retained the training content in a supervised demonstration.

Develop, maintain and disseminate information and technical guidelines related to facilities safety.

Assist supervisors in establishing procedures for the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Provide instruction to supervisors and handouts/tools to facilitate “toolbox” safety sessions within the individual maintenance and trades shops.

Create, update and maintain written policies and procedures to comply with state and federal regulations and campus standards related to facilities/trades health and safety programs.

As necessary, verify that employees understand and can apply the procedures in the workplace.

Work with EH&S management and other departments to obtain approvals, authorizations and commitments.

Actively assist supervisors in conforming with policies and updates to maintain compliance.

Provide guidance on purchases of safety equipment and engineering controls.

Provide assistance for job hazard analyses and other work safety related requests.

Conduct accident investigations for incidents involving Facilities Operations personnel, property or related environmental incidents.

Perform hazard assessments and job safety analyses, using instrumentation to measure and monitor conditions and workplace exposures.

Prepare technical and administrative reports from hazard assessments and accident investigations; present information to stakeholders and provide recommendations for accident avoidance.

Define employees falling under various regulatory requirements for workplace monitoring and medical surveillance; work with employees, supervisors, EH&S and contractors to arrange services.

Assist and interface with EH&S and operations personnel for asbestos and mold-related calls, non-routine pest control and other problems and emergencies; support the EH&S asbestos and lead programs as required.

As assigned, serve as the Chair or Co-Chair of the Facilities Safety Committee.

Attend bi-weekly Facilities Operations Supervisors Meetings to provide updates on safety programs and initiatives.

Conduct minimally annual inspections of facilities-operated shops on north, south and downtown campuses.

Identify risks with shop supervisors and personnel and correct action items; issue and maintain reports and track action items.

Conduct periodic, unannounced walkthroughs and provide support for correction of action items found.

As assigned, serve on laboratory inspection teams and perform lab safety audits to identify hazards, dangerous exposures and unsafe conditions; assist in preparing reports and documentation.

Assist with evaluating hazards related to facilities work in labs and support spaces where hazardous materials are used; ensure PPE and procedures protect facilities personnel when conducting work in labs.

Complete the initial OSHA 32 hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response training and maintain it with annual 8 hour refreshers; participate in UB Response Team training; respond to emergency calls and assist with containment and cleanup of hazardous materials releases; serve as UB EH&S Incident Commander on hazardous releases as assigned.
