About the Department/College This position reports to the Dean's Office within the College of the Environment, Forestry, and Natural Sciences. The primary work location is in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, which supports innovative research and teaching in chemical and biochemical sciences.
About the Position The Facility Administration Manager oversees the use of chemicals and chemical storage for the Chemistry and Biochemistry and other users in the College of the Environment, Forestry and Natural Sciences. The role manages chemical ordering, safe storage, and the logistics of the chemistry stockroom, which provides research and instructional labs with necessary chemicals and supplies. The position also acts as building manager for various college buildings and coordinates repair of autoclaves and RO systems.
Responsibilities Include
30% - Inventory / Stockroom Management
Manages appropriate levels of chemistry stockroom inventory items, including proper storage of hazardous materials and adjusting prices to reflect current procurement costs.
Ensures proper training of TAs, Faculty and other staff on stockroom procedures and safety, including handling of hazardous materials such as bulk ethanol and acetone.
Manages and maintains a current catalog of Safety Data Sheets for all chemicals found in the stockroom.
Ensures the proper disposal of outdated chemicals.
Ensures compliance with the NAU Site Specific Chemical Hygiene Plan (Essential).
30% - Stockroom Sales
Provides essential chemical and research materials to support university research and laboratory instruction.
Provides laboratory equipment to students, such as goggles, calculators, and replacement glassware. Includes billing to the appropriate student or speedchart (Essential).
25% - Procurement
Manages inventory and purchasing for the Chemistry stockroom, research and instructional laboratories, including:
Using the university's PS financials software to generate purchase orders for items over $5,000 or for companies that do not accept credit cards.
Ordering, receiving, and distributing goods efficiently and timely.
Comparing prices between vendors to secure the best deal; recommending or initiating cost‑saving measures.
Notifying PIs of price discrepancies on special orders.
Notifying end users when goods arrive.
Substituting items with an equivalent when the requested item is out of stock or discontinued by vendor, or when the Chemistry Stockroom has a suitable in‑stock item.
Requesting verification from the PI when a requested description does not match the vendor's description.
Providing the end user or vendor with proper permits and documentation when ordering restricted goods.
Controlling the supply of Excise Tax Free ethanol for the entire university (Essential).
10% - Building Management
Performs building manager duties to include checking buildings (17, 21, 36, 88) for burnt‑out light bulbs, water leaks, and the status of autoclaves and RO/DI water systems.
Initiating work requests by contacting technicians (RO/DI, Autoclaves) to repair or maintain needed items (Essential).
5% - Other duties as assigned (Marginal).
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or related field.
1 year of management experience.
2 years of relevant experience.
*A combination of related education, experience, and training may be used as an equivalent to the above Minimum Qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications
Familiarity with budgeting.
Experience with chemical storage and safety.
Familiarity with purchasing rules and regulations and purchasing card reconciliation.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Knowledge
Knowledge of laboratory operation principles and practices, including sample preparation, handling, data acquisition, processing, and interpretation.
Knowledge of laboratory health and safety requirements.
Skills
Customer service skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Abilities
Establishes and maintains effective working relationships.
Communicates effectively.

Compensation Budgeted salary is $57,535.
