Permit Technician (Development Services Center)

Permit Technicians are front line customer service representatives and are likely the first connection our Clients will encounter in the Development Services Center. The Permit Technicians responsibilities include issuing building and tradesman permits in accordance with State Licensing requirements and The Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code. The responsibilities also include issuing Certificates of Occupancy, proper archive filing into Laserfiche and retention, answering telephone and email Client Code/Process questions, registering building plan submittals, and plan file/document gathering.
Processes electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and other permits by reviewing the scope of work to be performed, examining permit applications for accuracy, verifying and obtaining information to complete applications, inputting information into a computerized system, and determining permit fees.
Provides extensive customer service while assisting patrons in the completion of permit applications. Approves applications and issues permits.
Coordinates and expedites the construction permit issuance process by distributing applications, assisting customers in the completion of applications and prioritizing and assigning submitted building plans to the appropriate staff.
Provides information to applicants, including Architects, Engineers, Builders, Contractors, and Homeowners, about the permit issuance process.
Assists in resolving issues and answering questions related to permit applications, fees, plans and specifications submitted.
Performs related administrative duties including receiving, stamping, recording, and monitoring the digital storage, assignment and scanning plans and documents into Archive Laserfiche Digital storage.
Process requests for temporary certificate of occupancy (TCO) and Certificate of Occupancy (CO) when requested by applicant and authorized by the Building Official. (or Deputy or Team Leader).
Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.
Required
One year of experience in the building or construction trades; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Valid Driver's License required.
Certification from the State of Virginia as a Permit Technician within 18 months of appointment.
