Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Chief, Office of Engineering Services, the incumbent supervises the Region Office Engineer Branch in Redding. The position directs the work of Specification Engineers in developing and reviewing plans, specifications and estimates (PS&E) for highway improvement projects. The role is largely independent; a Professional Engineer (PE) is required.

Responsibilities

Supervise and manage the daily operations of the Region Office Engineer Branch. Direct Specification Engineers in creating, reviewing, and approving highway project plans, specifications, and estimates. Work independently on assignments, ensuring compliance with Caltrans policies and project objectives. Collaborate with internal and external staff including project engineers, traffic engineers, maintenance engineers, construction engineers, and local agencies. Apply logic and creativity in decision‑making processes to address organizational and stakeholder needs.

Minimum Requirements

Valid certificate of registration as a civil engineer issued by the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers. Valid driver’s license (required for operation of state‑owned or leased vehicles). Professional Engineering (PE) registration. Strong written communication skills; statement of qualifications (SOQ) must be provided.

Working Conditions

Position is located at 1031 Butte Street, Redding, CA 96001, Shasta County. Employees will work in a climate‑controlled office and may be required to travel throughout the northern region, often outdoors, and may be exposed to dirt, noise, uneven surfaces, and extreme temperatures. Telework may be offered at the department's discretion.
