Transport Engineer
to support the design, implementation, and maintenance of a high-performance IP/MPLS core network for a top-tier Alaska-based ISP. This fully remote role offers the opportunity to work with cutting‑edge optical and IP technologies in a collaborative environment, driving the reliability, scalability, and performance of a carrier‑grade infrastructure.
Core Responsibilities 1. Design, Planning & Engineering
Architect packet‑optical transport solutions with fiber route validation, power budgets, and OSNR margins
Conduct fiber characterization (OTDR, CD, PMD, splice loss, return loss) to validate optical paths
Engineer long‑haul and metro DWDM/ROADM links using Ciena 6500 and photonic line systems
2. Implementation, Turn‑Up & Migration
Deploy and test fiber spans using OTDR, OSA, PMD/CD analyzers
Lead SONET/TDM to OTN/IP migrations with comprehensive fiber health checks
Troubleshoot fiber impairments (CD, PMD, reflections, non‑linear effects) impacting DWDM/OTN performance
Deploy 400G/800G coherent optics ensuring OSNR/CD/PMD thresholds are met
3. Documentation & Workflow
Manage service orders and circuit designs using MetaSolv or equivalent systems
Maintain fiber characterization records and historical performance data
Document MOPs, rollback plans, rack elevations, and post‑change reports
Track maintenance window activities and verify post‑implementation success
4. Tools & Platforms
Design & Documentation: Visio, AutoCAD, Confluence, SharePoint
Inventory & Provisioning: MetaSolv, Mosaic, Cramer, Granite
Performance Monitoring: MCP (Ciena), Salesforce
Preferred Certifications
Nokia Optical Network Certification (ONC/OSC)
Ciena MCP & Optical Certifications (OC‑A/OC‑P/OC‑C)
MEF‑CECP, NRS II, CCNP
FOA CFOT with CFOS/T
EXFO or VIAVI Fiber Characterization Training
Required Skills & Expertise
Deep expertise in Nokia, MPLS, BGP, and network engineering
Proven ability to lead complex projects and mentor junior engineers
Advanced understanding of high availability, redundancy, testing, and security standards
Strong cross‑disciplinary engineering knowledge and decision‑making autonomy
Exceptional time and budget management across multiple concurrent initiatives
Work Schedule
100% Remote
Monday‑Friday, aligned to Alaska business hours
Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Charlotte, NC.
Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $50.00 – $70.00/hr.
