Seasonal Maintenance Worker – National Park Service
Location: Hopewell Furnace National Historical Park.
Summary: The Seasonal Maintenance Worker performs carpentry, painting, custodial duties, and occasional landscaping, grounds, road and trail maintenance (e.g., mowing, operating tractors). Responsibilities include repair of doors, windows, cabinetry, trim, and other associated tasks as needed.
Key Dates & Appointment
Entry on Duty (Typical): April – September 2025 (variable due to weather, project needs, or funding). Anticipated Entry: 3/22/2025. Initial Cut‑off: Tuesday, 30 December 2025.
Responsibilities
Perform grounds maintenance activities such as mowing, weed whacking, planting trees and shrubs using hand tools and mechanical equipment.
Perform snow removal activities using shovels, snow blowers, plows and other mechanical equipment.
Perform tree removal and pruning, including hazard tree removal, using hand tools and chain saws. Chainsaw Safety, Maintenance and Operation (CSMO) training will be provided.
Maintain trail infrastructure: grading, repairing water bars, tree pruning/removal, flashing trails, improving water runoff.
Work outside, inside, and in varying weather conditions during regular performance of duties.
Requirements
U.S. Citizenship required.
Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
Must meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
Direct Deposit required (via the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program).
Valid driver’s license; ability to operate government motor vehicle as part of official duties.
Uniform to be worn in compliance with National Park Service uniform standards; uniform allowance provided.
Minimum age: 18 years. For 16‑17 year‑olds, must have high‑school diploma or equivalent, formal vocational training, or another qualifying education status as described.
Qualifications
Ability to perform the work without more than normal supervision (SCREEN OUT): independent experience operating gasoline vehicles, caring for gardens, and performing minor duties in at least three of these trades: carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, or masonry; and janitorial work.
Ability to interpret instructions and specifications, including blueprint reading.
Proficiency in using and maintaining tools and equipment.
Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, and repair.
Knowledge of materials and technical practices.
Use of measuring instruments.
Physical Demands & Working Conditions
Workers may operate from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms; perform tasks in hard‑to‑reach positions; lift, carry, and set up equipment up to 40 lb. Work occurs indoors and outdoors, with exposure to dirt, spray, fumes, inclement weather, and protective gear.

Employment may terminate at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels, project needs, employee performance, or other considerations. Temporary seasonal employees may maintain non‑competitive re‑hire eligibility under the 1040‑hour winter total limit or subject to warrant limits.
