General Summary of the Position
The Heavy Equipment Operator operates heavy equipment such as cranes, clamshells, power shovels, motor graders, heavy loaders, carryalls, bulldozers, rollers, scrapers, and large industrial tractors with pan or scraper attachments. Equipment is used to excavate, load, or move dirt, gravel, or other materials. Operator may read and interpret grade and slope stakes and simple plans, and may grease, adjust and make emergency repairs to equipment. The Heavy Equipment Operator reports to Remedial Project Manager and safely operates a variety of equipment utilized in the construction of roads, highways, parking lots, clearing and grubbing required to complete remediation of sites and excavation of contaminated soil consistent with standard environmental procedures, loading trucks proficiently.
Essential Functions
Operate multiple types of heavy equipment of various sizes and weights able to establish required grades and cuts within acceptable tolerances
Follow Daily Procedures & Protocols as set forth in job orientations and trainings
Perform routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refer defects or needed repairs to supervisor; clean equipment
Assist in the installation and maintenance of traffic control devices. Control traffic at work sites by flagging to guide traffic through work areas, as required or assigned
Assist as laborers and/or technicians as requested by supervisors and foreman to expedite work as needed and aid personnel to operate the site in a safe manner
Pass training in shoring and sloping as required by OSHA, safety requirements, Kemron SOPs and Military safety requirements
Ensure that proper safety and incident reporting procedures are followed. Bring problems to the attention of the Foreman, Safety Director or HR Manager
Physical Work Activities and Exposure
Equipment Operators must have good eyesight and better than average coordination in order to operate both hand and foot levers simultaneously. Operators must have good judgment in order to perform complicated tasks and must be able to work closely with other crafts without constant supervision. Skilled operators are constantly alert and observant of their surroundings.
Work is regularly performed in outside weather conditions, including rain and extreme heat, near moving mechanical parts
Exposure to wet and/or humid conditions, vibration, dust, asphalt, and/or hazardous material
Will frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds
The noise level is usually loud
Frequent sitting, talking or listening
Use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls
Reach with hands and arms
Walk short distances, sometimes over uneven terrain
Must pass required medical monitoring to work while using respiratory protection including Air Purifying Respirators, and supplied air respirators
Understand and follow Kemron SOPs for specific task(s)
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics
Considerable knowledge of heavy-equipment operating principles. Ability to drive and operate the equipment under varying working conditions
Working knowledge of methods, materials and tools used in environmental remediation and construction work
Working knowledge of hazards and safety precautions common to heavy equipment operations
Ability to perform manual work requiring periods of extensive physical exertion and potential exposure to adverse weather conditions
Ability to work from construction specifications or blueprints
Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions
Ability to meet attendance schedule with dependability and consistency
Education, Training and Experience
Requires five (5) years of experience in operating heavy equipment, two (2) of which must have been related to environmental construction
Must have sufficient education to make appropriate arithmetic equations and complete written documentation; or an equivalent combination of experience, education and training that provides the desired knowledge, skills and characteristics
Requires 40-hour OSHA Hazardous Waste worker training
Requires 8-hour refresher training as required by OSHA
Certified first aid and CPR training preferred
FEMA 100, 200, 700 and 800 ICs training, as required on worksite
Special Requirements
Must possess valid and appropriate state driver's license with CDL endorsement with no active violations within the previous three years prior to employment and have good driving history approved by Kemron's insurance carrier that qualifies employee to drive company vehicles
Must understand and sign-off on Corporate and worksite Health and Safety Plan(s)
Must have sloping and shoring training
Must have Equipment Operator Safety Training
