Job Description - Equipment Operator (2503388) Overview The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Beaumont District is looking for a skilled and dedicated Equipment Operator to join our Special Operations team in District Maintenance. In this role, you will be responsible for operating a variety of heavy machinery to support vital road maintenance and construction projects that ensure the safety and quality of our transportation infrastructure. Responsibilities Operate heavy equipment such as tractor‑trailers, motor graders, large excavators, bulldozers, cranes, herbicide trucks, asphalt paving machines, asphalt distributors, milling machines, and dump trucks. Conduct preventive maintenance inspections, routine servicing, and minor repairs on equipment. Operate light equipment including front‑end loaders, pneumatic rollers, rotary brooms, spreader boxes, backhoes, street sweepers, and mowers. Assist in traffic control, placing and gathering cones, warning signs, and barricades; flag traffic. Provide support to local law enforcement at accident sites and assist stranded motorists. Maintain and complete required reports (time‑keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, PMI checklists, records of work in progress). Coordinate equipment operations for daily work assignments and serve as a project lead when required. Train other employees on equipment operation and safety procedures. Respond to emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills by cleaning or sanding bridges and roads and posting warning signs. Relocate heavy and light equipment by loading, securing, and unloading on haul trailers in compliance with federal, state, and department motor‑vehicle laws. Perform other assigned duties as required. Qualifications Valid Class A CDL and Texas Commercial Driver’s License at time of application. Minimum 1 year of experience operating maintenance and/or construction equipment (full‑time or prorated part‑time). College education or technical training may substitute experience on a year‑per‑year basis. Knowledge of Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance and repair procedures, industry safety standards, hazardous material storage & transport procedures. Proficient in coordinating labor, materials, and equipment; prioritizing and organizing work assignments; training in classroom, office, or field environments; using hand and power tools. Capacity to operate both light and heavy highway equipment safely. Can lift up to 50 lbs and carry up to 25 lbs frequently; ability to stand, kneel, bend, and walk over long distances. Must pass a drug test before employment and agree to random testing; must comply with the Department’s Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation. Must be able to report for 24‑hour shifts when notified for emergencies. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Work exposed to extreme temperatures (below 32°F or above 100°F) for more than one hour. Work in noise and weather conditions without full protection, including dust, wet leaves, or tires. Requires wearing protective gear: respirator, hard hat, etc. Movement: frequent lifting, carrying, standing, kneeling, bending, and walking over long distances. This job is physically demanding and requires a pre‑employment physical.
