Job Title Solid Waste Equipment Operator Job Summary The City of Roanoke is seeking a Solid Waste Equipment Operator to operate automated side loaders, knuckle boom and/or packer trucks, depending on the assigned route. The successful candidate will be the primary point of contact with citizens regarding solid waste, recycling, and bulk/brush issues. Key Responsibilities Drive and operate automated side loader, knuckle boom, and/or packer trucks. Read maps and plan the most efficient route for over 900 residential and/or business locations per day. Act as the primary point of contact with citizens concerning solid waste, recycling, and bulk/brush issues. Abate hydraulic spills and follow procedures if a chemical reaction occurs in the truck. Maintain accurate log sheets and checklists for operations, maintenance, and repairs. Adhere to city safety rules, occupational hazards, federal and state safety laws, and drug & alcohol testing guidelines for CDL. Ensure equipment is equipped with all necessary safety and operational items (pitchforks, radios, brooms, dust pans, toter barrels, spill kit, etc.). Operate heavy and light equipment for snow removal. Train and instruct sanitation workers; supervise 1–2 workers as needed. Follow established safety procedures and avoid known hazards. Handle customer interactions and explain city policies and code requirements tactfully. Qualifications High school diploma or GED. Valid commercial driver’s license Class B with air brake endorsement issued by the state of Virginia. 2–3 years of experience as a CDL A/B driver with city driving and multiple stops. Experience in solid waste management preferred. 2–3 years of customer interaction experience. Knowledge of city code, regulations, and safety procedures. Ability to read and interpret maps, safety rules, and procedure manuals. Strong reasoning ability and problem‑solving skills. Physical Demands & Work Environment The role requires walking, climbing, balancing, heavy lifting up to 50 pounds, and exposure to outdoor weather, moving mechanical parts, vibration, wet or humid conditions, fumes, and loud noise levels.
