Unit Secretary/Nursing Assistant - CNDH (UNC Health)
The Unit Secretary-Nursing Assistant II for the Center for Nutrition Diabetes Health performs a variety of secretarial support and basic nursing care activities for patients and families during his/her assigned shift, working under the supervision of the RN/LPN as defined by the NC Board of Nursing.
This role serves as a liaison between patients, families, and nursing staff while performing essential secretarial duties and basic nursing tasks.
Responsibilities
Assists in providing quality patient experience, including but not limited to: reception and greeting of patients and visitors, answering telephone calls professionally, scheduling and verifying patient appointments, collecting insurance card information and inputting data.
Collects patient copays, monitors cash drawer balances, coordinates cash intake with accounting.
Processes patient referrals and provides appropriate documentation, ensuring all required documentation is accurate and thorough according to department specific standards.
Maintains and orders nutritional supplies, ensures files and records are current and organized.
Measures vital signs (temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, height, weight) and promptly reports abnormal vital signs to the primary nurse or charge nurse.
Prepares patient rooms after each appointment, promotes effective communication among patients, teammates, providers and visitors, and provides timely updates and referrals.
Responds appropriately and promptly in emergency situations.
Performs routine office duties including filing, faxing, sorting and distributing documents, using all necessary software.
Ensures a safe, clean, and orderly environment for self, patients, and teammates.
Collaborates with office staff and external entities, participates in teamwork, accepts delegated tasks within scope of practice, seeks/help when needed.
Minimum Qualifications
Completion of state approved Level II Nurse Aide training and competency evaluation program or its equivalent.
High School Diploma or equivalent required; higher education from an accredited college supersedes this requirement.
Current listing on the North Carolina Nurse Aide II registry.
Certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support.
At least one year in a health care role preferred.
Valid NC Driver’s License.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Excellent patient and customer service to all patients, visitors and teammates.
Effective interpersonal skills to collaborate with teammates and communicate with patients.
Attention to detail, prioritization, and organization of multiple functions.
Flexibility and composure in stressful or changing situations.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office products; knowledge of Epic or EMR helpful.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions, communicate effectively, and rapidly learn new software.
Familiarity with basic medical terminology.
