Job Summary
Perform technical procedures involved in the procurement, processing, and evaluation of patient specimens for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Teach and perform routine clerical and technical procedures including specimen collection, waived testing; manage the delivery of supplies, preparation and processing of clinical specimens, order entry, and represent the laboratory to external clients.
Job Duties And Responsibilities
Perform routine and complex blood drawing procedures, including finger and heel sticks, pediatric venipuncture, and blood cultures following standard and Duke phlebotomy procedures.
Provide instructions to patients for proper collection of urine or stool specimens.
Provide monthly tally to manager/supervisor.
Perform quality control procedures and record/monitor temperatures to maintain compliance with internal and external regulations. Notify supervisor or PIC of problems/concerns.
Prepare and initiate tests including, but not limited to, waived testing.
Perform instrument start‑up and shut‑down procedures.
Maintain inventory of supplies; reorder as required; unpack supplies upon delivery, compare received items to packing slip, forward paperwork to appropriate personnel, and alert them of discrepancies.
Utilize various hospital information systems and software, including Softtech, SRS, Gajema, and Duke at Work.
Communicate in a professional and courteous manner with patients, families, and other medical personnel to solve problems, obtain information for laboratory records, explain procedures, allay fears, and elicit cooperation; relay problems to supervisor/manager for resolution when appropriate.
Participate in committees and attend meetings that improve patient safety or satisfaction, employee safety, or work culture, including performance improvement projects.
Participate in continuing education activities; maintain safety training; maintain records of each.
Float in practice to other specialties to cover providers as needed, delegated by nurse manager, health center administrator, charge nurse or nurse team lead.
Maintain clinical environment to meet JCAHO and OSHA regulations.
Other duties as delegated by nurse manager, provider, or health center administrator.
Job Eligibility Requirements
Education
High School diploma or GED. For assignment to phlebotomy, completion of a structured phlebotomy training course and clinical rotation is recommended.
Minimal educational or experience requirements may be modified on a case‑by‑case basis at the discretion of the CLIA director if minimal CLIA requirements are met by the employee for the tasks being performed.
Experience
Alternatively, an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.
Must have at least 2 years experience as a Clin Tech I or hold certification as a Phlebotomist and achieve required competency level for specified job responsibilities.
Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification
For assignment to Phlebotomy Services, certification as a phlebotomist by a nationally recognized board/agency may be required; certification of Basic Life Support preferred.
National Healthcare Association (NHA) – Clinical Laboratory Phlebotomy Examination (CLPlb), American Society of Clinical Pathologists – Phlebotomy Technician Examination (PBT(ASCP)), International Academy of Phlebotomy Sciences (IAPS), National Phlebotomy Association (NPA), American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT).
