Performs patient care procedures such as bedside testing under the direction of a licensed nurse. Operates patient monitoring systems. Job Description Perform phlebotomy and other collection procedures appropriately and according to established procedures. Perform specialized collection procedures such as urine drug collections and PPD's as required. Process requisitions and enter test orders into the computer system, perform inquiry functions, specimen transport verification, and retrieve and print collection labels. Receive, process and store specimens as appropriate, centrifuge, split, acidify, aliquot, measure and stabilize; perform biohazard disposal as needed or appropriate. Perform waived and moderate complexity testing where documented competency. Perform routine equipment maintenance and function checks including pipette calibration. Order and maintain supplies and inventory. Ensure compliance with all regulatory agencies. Assist clinical floor staff with stocking supplies, cleaning, patient transport, and other tasks. Other duties as assigned. Courteously greet and direct customers; promote/facilitate accurate and timely unit communication; keep locator boards current. Answer telephones and efficiently process information, including accurately transcribing physicians orders. Communicate and process necessary paperwork/information for admissions, transfers and discharges; ensure Medical Records complete and in order at discharge. Maintain correct census and bed status report; assemble patients charts, organize them daily, add blank forms as needed. Maintain and account for office supplies; assist with nursing unit cleanliness and orderliness. Monitor, collect, and record patient data (vital signs, weight, etc.) and transport patients, documenting action in patient record. Assist in nutritional wellbeing, tray delivery, feeding assistance, accurate input/output records. Assist with activities of daily living such as personal hygiene, positioning, and ambulation. Communicate shift summary info before leaving unit. Round on patients and families frequently; report issues to responsible nurse. Insert and remove gastric and urethral tubes; perform enemas and disimpactions. Remove peripheral IV lines; perform phlebotomy on certain units after training; operate patient monitoring systems; perform bedside testing such as Oximetry, ECG, glucometry, urinalysis and other tests. Perform wound care and dressing changes, remove staples and sutures, assist nurses and physicians with sterile procedures, assist with application/removal of restraints under RN direction. Apply oxygen delivery devices as ordered without changing settings; assist patients with portable or wall oxygen; ensure proper storage of cylinders. Document all care provided in patient record; assemble charts; post lab and other results; use computerized documentation system at appropriate skill level. Deliver specimens to laboratory, microbiology, pathology; transport x-rays, blood products and equipment. Maintain cleanliness of nutrition areas; clean and store equipment; empty trash, linen bags, sharps; stock supplies, linens, paper goods; inventory equipment; process broken equipment; maintain equipment logs. Perform other functions as required. Qualifications High School/GED. Clinical experience OR completion of Unit Secretary course OR completion of self‑study module preferred. Must successfully complete competency verification before starting on assigned unit. BLS required at time of hire.
