Summary
The Department of English at Appalachian State University invites applications for a non‑tenure‑track Teaching Assistant or Associate Professor in Environmental Literature and American discourse and democracy. The position will begin in August 2026 pending final administrative and budgetary approval and will involve teaching a 4/4 load of courses including: ENG 2220: Environmental Literature, Writing, and Film , ENG 3715: Literature and the Environment , and ENG 2330: Discourse and Democracy as part of ASU’s Foundations of American Democracy program.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Teach the courses listed above and may also teach general education and upper‑level courses as needed.
Serve on departmental committees and perform related service work.
Demonstrate experience in critical pedagogies and supporting success for students of all backgrounds.
Provide scholarly service and maintain an active academic profile.
Eligibility and Qualifications
Ph.D. in English, Rhetoric, or a related interdisciplinary humanities field (Ph.D. in hand by August 2026).
Evidence of successful teaching experience.
Preference for candidates with experience in theories, literatures, and rhetorics of environmental humanities and democracy.

ABD Consideration
ABD with reduction in rank and salary: ABDs will be considered with a one‑year fixed‑term contract and paid at the instructor level until definitive degree verification is received. Upon confirmation, the candidate will be returned to assistant professor rank with commensurate salary.
No ABD consideration: Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree will be considered for the position.
