Job Overview The Psychiatric Nursing Assistant IV (PNA Team Lead) provides advanced rehabilitative patient care under the clinical supervision of a licensed nurse in an inpatient setting. This role coordinates assignments for all PNAs, mentors staff, and participates in the recovery team to support patients’ progress toward individualized goals.

Responsibilities

Coordinate assignments and specific duties for PNAs, including assisting patients with activities of daily living, hygiene, and meals.

Implement individualized recovery plans and provide consistent, ongoing support to help patients reach their goals.

Engage patients therapeutically using person-centered communication skills.

Accompany patients to appointments and promote participation in classes and programs.

Communicate effectively with team members and document patient conditions, behaviors, and progress in the electronic record.

Participate in recovery team and admissions team meetings, shift reporting, and shift change communication.

Provide guidance to PNAs in monitoring medication administration, vital signs, and other assigned tasks.

Promote safety through environmental awareness, crisis intervention (TIPS), and de-escalation techniques.

Perform CPR/Heimlich and use an AED according to American Heart Association guidelines.

Preceptor role: orient and train new employees (PNA I/II and temporary personnel).

Participate in disaster response, recovery, or COOP activation as needed.

Essential Job Functions

Attend work regularly and comply with shift schedules, including evenings, nights, and weekends.

Coordinate PNAs’ assignments and provide direction and mentorship.

Deliver verbal and written communication regarding patient progress, safety, and medication monitoring.

Facilitate group activities and support patient engagement in programming.

Model appropriate response in crisis situations using TIPS and the least restrictive intervention.

Collaborate with the licensed nurse to provide timely, clinically relevant patient information.

Participate in performance evaluations and identify training opportunities for PNAs.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

Knowledge of CAPPS, CARE, Microsoft Word and Excel.

Knowledge of patient aggression reduction interventions and patient care techniques.

Effective interpersonal and leadership skills for team interaction.

Computer and office equipment proficiency.

Ability to prepare and maintain records, files, and reports.

Ability to serve as a lead worker, provide direction, and train others.

Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.

Ability to administer first aid, CPR, and TIPS.

Teamwork and supervisory skills.

Registrations, Licensure, and Certifications

Valid Texas driver license required for patient transport (obtainable within 90 days of hire).

CPR certification required or must be obtained within 60 days of employment.

Initial Screening Criteria

Four years of work experience, with at least three years in direct care.

Preferred: at least three years of psychiatric patient experience.

Preferred: at least three years of supervisory experience.

Additional Information

Must pass fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and other registry checks.

Must comply with HHSC immunization policy and be vaccinated according to level of contact with patients.

Flexibility for overtime, extended hours, or alternate shift pattern assignment.
