Bancroft Construction Services is seeking an experienced on-call Field Biologist to support environmental compliance and construction monitoring for projects in the Central Valley area. This position is ideal for a motivated biologist who enjoys fieldwork, problem-solving in active construction environments, and working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.
This is an on-call, project-based position with variable hours depending on project needs.
Position Summary This field-based role involves conducting focused species surveys, monitoring construction activities, implementing avoidance and minimization measures, and documenting compliance with federal, state, and project-specific environmental permits. The position requires the ability to work independently in dynamic outdoor and construction environments while coordinating closely with construction teams and environmental staff.
Responsibilities
Conduct focused surveys for special-status species, including San Joaquin kit fox, burrowing owl, blunt-nosed leopard lizard, Swainson’s hawk, and/or California tiger salamander
Biological construction monitoring and environmental inspections
Perform pre-construction surveys and ongoing compliance monitoring
Implement avoidance and minimization measures (WEAPs, ESAs, buffers, exclusion zones)
Monitor and maintain wildlife exclusion fencing
Conduct nesting bird surveys and wildlife monitoring
Collect field data using GPS and mobile apps (ArcGIS Field Maps, Fulcrum)
Prepare accurate daily logs and compliance documentation
Coordinate directly with construction crews and project staff
Qualifications & Skills Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Ecology, or related field
Minimum 2 years of field biology or construction monitoring experience
Experience conducting surveys for San Joaquin kit fox, burrowing owl, blunt-nosed leopard lizard, Swainson’s hawk, and/or California tiger salamander
Experience assessing vegetation communities in the Central Valley
Valid U.S. Driver’s License and ability to travel independently
Ability to work outdoors in variable weather and terrain
Strong attention to detail and communication skills
Flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays, and overnight travel
Preferred Qualifications
Prior experience on CA High-Speed Rail projects
Designated Biologist or General Biological Monitor authorizations
Experience leading WEAPs and working directly with contractors
Work Environment
Long hours in outdoor environments and temperature extremes
Walking or hiking on uneven terrain while carrying field equipment
Working in active construction sites around heavy equipment
Occasional travel throughout Central Valley
