Wastewater Operator II Job Summary: This position performs a variety of skilled work to maintain chemical feeder equipment, biological processes, motors, telemetering sensory equipment, and pumping equipment for wastewater treatment plant equipment and operations. Performs difficult technical and mechanical work in the operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment and conveyance facilities. May provide direction to peers and subordinates in performing routine day-to-day work activities.

Responsibilities

Demonstrate a continuous effort to improve operations by streamlining work processes, decreasing turnaround times, and working cooperatively and jointly to provide efficiency and excellence in the use of City resources.

Deliver outstanding customer service. Establish and maintain open communication with all internal and external customers.

Adhere to industry and City safety standards, policies, practices, and procedures. Provide services in accordance with government standards such as OSHA and MAG. Prepare and submit required safety records and reports.

Execute routine and emergency operational, maintenance, and repair functions on equipment utilized in the wastewater reclamation division. Clarify routine day‑to‑day priorities in the field.

Conduct daily inspections of wastewater treatment facilities, aquifer recharge facilities, and related equipment; record readings; adjust process settings to maintain system flow and stability; maintain records and reports; process biosolids with complex equipment and assist with digestion facilities.

Conduct and interpret wastewater process control laboratory analyses and permit‑required lab testing. Make process‑control adjustments and modifications to ensure facility compliance with all permit parameters.

Assume the duties and responsibilities of the Senior Wastewater Operator as assigned during their absence.

Requirements & Qualifications

Formal Education/Knowledge : Equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency. Knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes.

Experience : Minimum two years of experience in a related field.

Certifications and Other Requirements : Valid Driver’s License and ADEQ Grade I Wastewater Treatment Operator Certification. Obtain an ADEQ Grade II Wastewater Treatment Operator Certification and a Commercial Driver’s License within 12 months of hire.

Math & Writing Skills : Ability to read manuals, journals, and apply fractions, percentages, ratios, and measurement. Ability to write reports, prepare business letters, and summaries with proper format, punctuation, and grammar.

Managerial Skills : Occasional direction of helpers, assistants, seasonal employees, interns, or temporary employees.

Technical Skills : Comprehensive knowledge of wastewater processes, equipment, and instrumentation. Ability to troubleshoot pumps, blowers, and instrumentation and to make process adjustments using SCADA.

Human Relations Skills : Provide advice to others outside direct reporting relationships and persuade to gain cooperation.

Objectives – First 12 Months

First 3 Months :

Within 90 days, perform all daily inspection rounds at Goodyear, Corgett Wash, and Rainbow Valley WRFs.

Track attendance, complete leave of absence, data collection, and log book entries.

Use JHAs and SOPs to perform confined space entry and follow all safety procedures.

First 6 Months :

Operate solids handling equipment and maintain proper solids concentrations.

Adhere to work schedules and submit Leave of Absence forms timely.

Complete data collection and log books.

Understand SCADA systems, alarms, and alerts.

Demonstrate understanding of hydraulic flow paths and discharge options.

Obtain a Class B CDL driver’s license with tanker endorsement.

First 12 Months :

Understand wastewater division permits and discharge limits.

Follow SOPs and City policies.

Identify, diagnose, and recommend corrections for operational problems.

Perform confined space entry using department SOP.

Obtain ADEQ Wastewater Grade II certification.
