Economic Planning Engineer – HF Sinclair
Location: Eldorado, KS
Job Description HF Sinclair is seeking an Economic Planning Engineer to conduct engineering and analytical assignments. The role functions as a technical specialist, formulating and developing moderately complex engineering concepts to meet oil flow plans and optimize economic conditions for the El Dorado Refinery.
Responsibilities
Use common engineering and analytical concepts to perform projects and assignments for the El Dorado Economic and Planning Department with direct supervision.
Support and optimize refinery operations through economic modeling and troubleshooting skills, providing direction and assistance to colleagues.
Resolve complex problems; generate and update operating instructions that may include unit rates, yields, octane targets, distillation cut points and inventory targets; communicate effectively with Operations Business Teams regarding economic incentives for improved performance.
Drive the refinery molecule management effort by identifying opportunities, quantifying value, and informing the refinery team.
Evaluate economic projects and champion them through the approval process.
Provide direction to product blenders according to economic drivers.
Prepare and present medium‑term production plans for sales; communicate changes to sales and logistics teams based on refinery performance.
Member of the site Turnaround Steering Team – assist in determining optimum dates, timing and sequence of unit outages.
Develop and present the 90‑day oil flow forecast and annual oil flow budget; identify unit constraints relevant to oil flow planning.
Determine LPO for refinery events and communicate with stakeholders; issue monthly reports outlining LPO events.
Identify, define and implement opportunities for improving the overall economics of refinery operation.
Analyze the economics of oil flow and/or project alternatives where appropriate and calculate ROI for proposed projects.
Provide various reports daily, weekly, monthly or as needed.
Special Assignments Assignments or tasks assigned by supervisor as determined in their sole and complete discretion.
Experience A minimum of two years of progressive work experience in engineering discipline.
Preferred Experience Refinery or petrochemical industry experience required.
Education A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or a combination of experience and education is required.
Required Skills Knowledge of commonly used engineering concepts and ability to apply this knowledge analytically; ability to coordinate all phases of a project.
Must have technical knowledge of refinery operations and ability to assess performance of various refinery processing units and make decisions on how to best manage day‑to‑day operations; must understand product specifications and blending methods required to make on‑spec products.
Preferred Skills Working knowledge of Microsoft products and experience with engineering software.
Supervisory/Managerial Responsibility May be responsible for supervising contractors depending on assignment.
Work Conditions Office and plant‑based with up to 10% travel required. Subject to varying weather conditions and required to work in all temperatures, including outdoors.
