Capital One . We are seeking a Strategic Risk Oversight Manager to join the Strategic Risk team. This high visibility role provides independent oversight and challenge of strategic risks resulting from competition, the external environment, or from the company’s strategic choices or execution. The manager ensures strategic risks are proactively identified, appropriately assessed, and effectively managed in alignment with the company’s risk appetite and long‑term strategic goals.

Responsibilities

Partner with Divisional teams, Corporate Strategy, and Risk Management functions to identify and evaluate strategic risks that may impact the company’s strategy or result from the pursuit of that strategy.

Provide oversight and effective challenge of risk identification and other risk assessments to ensure divisions appropriately consider market trends, competitive changes, and the company’s strategic positioning; offer expert advice on the quantification and qualitative impact of strategic risks on the business model or financial performance.

Evaluate the adequacy and effectiveness of divisions’ risk control and mitigation actions, ensuring they are timely, appropriate, and mitigate key failure modes.

Strengthen governance of strategic risk through policy enhancement, routine improvement, or interaction model refinement.

Act as a trusted advisor to Business Risk Offices and stakeholders on the strategic risk implications of internal choices and external trends.

Draft regular updates to executive management and the Board Risk Committee on changes to the company’s strategic risk profile.

Partner with stakeholders at all levels across the company to manage, inform, and influence outcomes.

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent military experience.

At least 5 years of risk management or financial services consulting experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Strategy or risk management experience in a large financial services organization or management consultancy.

Comprehensive knowledge of the end‑to‑end risk management lifecycle, risk frameworks, and governance structures.

Proven ability to distill complex information into a consumable narrative for an executive and Board level audience.

Proven ability to identify and evaluate risk pathways and devise management strategies.

Collaborative, team player with the ability to navigate a complex organization and influence outcomes.

Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and critical thinking skills.

The minimum and maximum full‑time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Salaries for part‑time roles will be prorated based on the agreed number of hours to be regularly worked.

McLean, VA: $146,100 – $166,700 Richmond, VA: $132,800 – $151,600

This role is also eligible to earn performance‑based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long‑term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non‑discretionary depending on the plan.
