Process Engineer – HF Sinclair

Basic Function HF Sinclair seeks a Process Engineer to conduct engineering assignments for the Engineering Department, working independently and acting as a resource up to a lead position for less experienced personnel.

Job Duties

Define projects by determining objectives, selecting technical strategies, and providing technical assistance to business units.

Plan projects by writing specifications, developing schedules and budgets, and identifying and developing process design of additions and improvements to existing processes.

Implement projects by monitoring performance, taking corrective actions, providing feedback, generating, monitoring, and updating operating procedures and reporting weekly/monthly, and negotiating for materials, supplies and services.

Complete projects by delivering output, wrapping up administrative details, and evaluating the project in its entirety.

Analyze the economics of each project where appropriate; calculate ROI for proposed projects.

Act as a mentor to other engineers.

Track performance measures and recommend parameters.

Use past knowledge and experience to ensure safe, environmentally secure, and efficient operations.

Provide documentation and operating analysis for management.

Additional Responsibilities

Support and optimize refinery or pipeline/terminal operations with troubleshooting skills.

Design chemical or other plant equipment and devise processes for manufacturing chemicals and products.

Design pipeline/terminal or other equipment and devise processes for crude and refined product movements via pipeline, terminals and/or tankage.

Conduct research to develop new and improved chemical manufacturing processes.

Design, plan layout, and oversee personnel engaged in constructing, controlling, and improving equipment for carrying out chemical processes on a commercial scale.

Provide mechanical, civil, and structural review for all new, existing, and revamped equipment and facilities to ensure consistency with applicable design standards such as API, ASME, NFPA, ANSI, OSHA, etc.

Assist with startup for existing and new facilities.

Perform economic analyses and fill ROI and AFE reports for capital upgrades.

Determine most effective arrangement of operations, such as mixing, crushing, heat transfer, distillation, oxidation, hydrogenation, and polymerization.

Develop and implement processing methods and controls to meet quality standards in the most cost‑efficient manner.

Investigate and resolve work‑in‑process problems.

Recommend and implement improvements and/or modifications in sequence of operations, equipment utilization, and related matters.

Review proposals of outside vendors regarding purchase of new or modernization of existing processing equipment.

Experience A minimum of 3–8 years of progressive work experience in a specific engineering discipline and project management experience is required. Emphasis on power distribution and controls engineering for the electrical discipline is required depending on assignment.

Preferred Experience Professional Engineer registration, refinery or petrochemical industry experience, and knowledge of FCC, CCR, Alky, Sulfur unit, Delayed Coking, Lubes Processing, and hydro‑treating for the chemical discipline.

Education Level Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in an Engineering discipline.

Required Skills Technical expertise in the area of specialty; advanced ability to stay abreast of new technology developments and processes; strong knowledge of Microsoft products, engineering software, and commonly used engineering concepts; familiarity with standards and practices of the specific discipline; effective communication skills; advanced reading and writing skills; ability to perform advanced mathematical calculations.

Preferred Skills Working knowledge of and experience with engineering software.

Work Conditions Office and plant based with up to 20% travel by land and air. Petroleum refinery, warehouse/plant environment, and outdoor environment including chemicals, pressure vessels, tanks, rotating equipment, wet and/or oil‑contaminated conditions, below grade and elevated positions, and confined spaces. Subject to all temperatures, weather, and varying road conditions.

Physical Requirements Job conditions require standing, walking, sitting, talking or hearing, making visual inspections, precise hand and finger movements, lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs, climbing up to 200 ft, perceiving color differences, wearing personal protective equipment and respirator in emergency, operating company vehicles; valid state driver’s license and proof of insurance required. Job conditions may require twisting, stooping, crouching, kneeling, reaching or grasping.
