The Mold Maker is responsible for the build, repair, modification, and ongoing maintenance of high-precision injection molds supporting medical device manufacturing. This role ensures molds are capable, reliable, and production‑ready, with a strong focus on tight tolerances, process stability, and long‑term mold performance. The Mold Maker works closely with Tool Engineering, CNC departments, and Manufacturing to support new builds, engineering changes, troubleshooting, and preventative maintenance activities.
Senior Mold Maker – A or B Shift Essential Duties/Responsibilities
Build new injection molds and perform engineering changes, repairs, and refurbishments to existing production molds.
Troubleshoot complex, tight‑tolerance mold issues to restore and sustain stable, repeatable production performance.
Execute structured preventative maintenance activities, including cleaning, lubrication, polishing, and inspection, to keep molds in optimal operating condition.
Evaluate mold performance during production runs and trials, identifying opportunities to improve tool capability, reliability, and long‑term performance.
Provide technical input and feedback to Tool Engineering on mold performance, failure modes, and preventative maintenance strategies.
Communicate mold‑related issues clearly, recommending corrective actions and tooling alternatives to support production and quality objectives.
Support mold trials, startups, and validation activities as required to ensure production readiness.
Set up and operate toolroom equipment, including manual and CNC mills, grinders, lathes, and related machinery.
Maintain accurate documentation for mold repairs, modifications, and preventative maintenance activities.
Work independently while aligning priorities and technical direction with the Toolroom Supervisor.
Perform all work in accordance with applicable quality system requirements, documentation standards, and cleanroom protocols.
Required Skills/Abilities
Strong working knowledge of plastic injection mold design, construction, and function.
Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex mold issues in a production environment.
Precision machining and grinding capability to tolerances of ±0.0001 inches.
Proficient in the setup and operation of toolroom equipment, including manual machining tools and CNC mills.
Mechanical aptitude with excellent problem‑solving and troubleshooting skills.
Ability to conceptualize solutions and apply creativity to tooling challenges.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality and workmanship.
Ability to work effectively as part of a team while maintaining individual accountability.
Experience using CAD/CAM software in a mold manufacturing or repair environment (Mastercam preferred).
Sinker EDM and Wire EDM experience preferred but not required.
Education And Experience
Minimum (10) years’ experience at a journeyman level including exposure to a variety of mold manufacturing and plastic injection molding processes and technologies.
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand, bend, and work in a toolroom environment for extended periods.
Ability to lift up to 30 pounds as required.
Visual acuity required for precision machining, inspection, and detailed mold work.
Work Environment
Manufacturing and toolroom environment requiring appropriate PPE.
Exposure to noise, machinery, and shop conditions typical of a toolroom.
Interaction with cleanroom manufacturing areas as required.
Pay:
$30.00 - $40.00 per hour –
