Inspector (Plumbing) – NYC Department of Buildings Job ID: 31629

Location: Citywide, Unit assignment and work location based on operational need. Transfers may occur at any time with sufficient notice.

Salary: $62,244.00 – $71,581.00

Job Description The NYC Department of Buildings enforces the NYC Construction Codes, Energy Code, and Zoning Resolution. This position performs inspections of plumbing installations, repairs, and alterations for conformity with NYC Construction Codes and Department rules.

Responsibilities

Perform technical inspections of plumbing, gas, and fire suppression systems for compliance.

Respond to, report, and investigate accidents, incidents, and complaints for conformity.

Inspect gas piping systems to assess condition and status.

Witness tests on drainage, water, air, gas, sprinkler, standpipe, and fire pump for violations or illegal practices.

Study drawings and other information to obtain details for inspections.

Issue violations, summonses, and stop work orders.

Verify licenses of onsite workers.

Advising recipients of nature of violating condition when issuing violations.

Testify as needed, including at ECB, depositions, and court.

Maintain records and make reports.

Explain and enforce laws and rules relevant to the field.

May assign, supervise, review, and evaluate work of subordinates.

May train subordinates in their duties.

May review applications relevant to the field.

May assist supervisor.

May operate a motor vehicle in the performance of assigned duties.

Minimum Qualifications

Two years of full‑time satisfactory experience performing one of the following: plumber, inspector of plumbing, or superintendent of plumbers.

One year of full‑time experience as described above and one year of formal training or education in an accredited college, technical school, or trade school with emphasis on plumbing.

Sixty credits toward a degree in civil engineering, engineering technology, mechanical engineering, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.

Completion of an apprentice program, a minimum of two years in length, in plumbing or plumbing inspection.

A license as a professional engineer or registered architect issued pursuant to the New York State Education Law.

Education and/or experience that is equivalent to any of the above.

Preferred Skills

Experience or training in the design of Plumbing and Fire Sprinkler/Standpipe systems.

Working knowledge of the NYC Construction Codes.

Computer literacy.

Additional Information

Candidates must successfully pass a drug screening.

Motor vehicle driver license valid in New York State required.

Special Patrolman status required for NYC candidates.

Applicants residing in New York City must apply for Special Patrolman status.

Physically may be required to walk, climb, stand for extended periods, handle damp or dusty conditions. May be required to work shifts including nights, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.
