Job Summary The Technical Leader I / NDE Technology will join EPRI's growing NDE Team and have the opportunity to lead the development and advancement of NDE in the power industry. The Technical Leader will lead major research projects, develop, use advanced tools and processes specifically in the electromagnetic NDE application areas for tubing and surface inspections with bobbin and array coil techniques. The candidate should be familiar using multiple eddy current test systems namely, Zetec, CoreStar, and EddyFi with their respective data analysis software to evaluate tubing and array data.
Knowledge about other electromagnetic methods including remote‑field, near‑field, low and balanced field, and saturated low frequency eddy currents, magnetic flux leakage, pulsed eddy current, and alternating current field measurement techniques for applications to other power plant components is desired. Knowledge about using other NDE inspection methods such as ultrasonic and others would be advantageous.
Key Responsibilities
Lead efforts primarily in the electromagnetic research area and participate in the development and application of products and services through self‑involvement, contractors, departmental or cross‑functional teams.
Apply technical expertise and develop technical solutions to complex problems requiring ingenuity, creativity, and sometimes thinking outside the box.
Conduct research directly in complex, high‑impact technical or scientific fields.
Provide guidance to the industry on optimum NDE application and inspection practices and successfully transfer the technology of research results and products for member use.
Be innovative, motivated, and challenge the status quo for continuous improvement for the program and self‑performance.
Continuously seek new ideas and advancements made in the NDE arena for improved and optimized NDE application, techniques, and inspection practices.
Apply technical knowledge to industry issues and propose solutions that address emerging needs.
Manage projects efficiently and effectively, meeting program and sector goals including financial goals, project milestones, and technology transfer.
Communicate strategies and results, written and verbal, to program members, potential members, and external stakeholders through reports, meetings, webinars, workshops, and conferences.
Develop research or service opportunities of value to EPRI members that fit EPRI's mission, vision, and capabilities, including solving customer problems, producing insights, and delivering training.
Propose and promote new NDE R&D project ideas to the NDE, Technology Innovation programs, and advisory committees.
Work closely with the Program Manager to support the NDE Program and Director's vision.
Collaborate with other EPRI programs and sectors to develop and execute projects.
Travel domestically and internationally as required (including at least 25% travel).
Broaden technical expertise and interface with national and international technical networks with manufacturers, consultants, national labs, academia, and research organizations.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in engineering, or an advanced or associate degree in NDE, engineering, or a relevant scientific field.
Minimum 5 to 10 years of field experience performing electromagnetic inspections, research, and/or development projects, including advanced concepts, proven leadership, and project management experience.
Preferred experience working in a utility as an electromagnetic NDE staff, service provider, or researcher.
Strong knowledge and background in electromagnetic techniques for tubing and surface applications.
Knowledge of ultrasonic applications advantageous.
Innovative, idea‑driven, self‑motivated, with a track record of producing and delivering quality results.
Technical depth and breadth as a subject‑matter expert.
Understanding of the R&D process and familiarity with quality and safety programs.
Excellent written, oral communication, and presentation skills.
Proficiency in AutoCAD, MATLAB, and Excel.
Team‑oriented, collaborating with external contractors and partners.
Willingness to travel at least 25% of the time, including international travel.
Salary and Benefits The salary range for this position is $115,000 USD to $130,000 USD annually. The role is eligible to participate in EPRI's annual incentive program and standard employee benefit programs, which include medical, dental, vision, 401(k), STD/LTD, paid family leave, life and accident insurance, paid time off (flexible vacation, sick leave, holidays), and more.
