Summary Join our Elevator Support Unit (ESU)! The position supports contracted skilled trades work on Weapon Elevators and Aircraft Elevators and their systems on U.S. Navy ships. The selected candidate will perform a variety of skilled trades, maintenance and technical tasks on aircraft carrier elevators, cargo handling systems and associated equipment, including aircraft elevators, weapons elevators and vertical stores conveyors. Work includes daily physical labor in an industrial and shipboard environment. Travel within and outside the continental United States may be required. This is a full‑time position located in San Diego, CA.

What You Will Do

Provide welding support certified in Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (TIG) and Gas Metal Arc Welding (MIG) on plate or pipe.

Use brazing and/or flame‑cutting equipment to weld or join metal components or fill holes, indentations, or seams of fabricated metal products.

Weld components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions.

Ensure shop safety and housekeeping are followed.

Ensure all materials and equipment are properly and safely stored, protected, and maintained.

Recognize, set up, and operate hand and power tools common to the welding trade, such as shielded metal arc and gas metal arc welding equipment.

Lay out, position, align, and secure parts and assemblies prior to assembly, using straightedges, combination squares, calipers, and rulers.

What You Must Have

High school education, trade school or equivalent, and 6 years of related experience.

Current or prior experience welding SMAW/STICK, GTAW/TIG, and GMAW/MIG.

Ability to obtain and maintain a DBIDS badge, Security Clearance, and must be a U.S. citizen.

Ability to read, interpret, and follow detailed oral and written instructions, schematics or drawings, and technical documents.

Must be able to calibrate and make minor repairs on tools/equipment.

Ability to make decisions using sound judgment while complying with policies, procedures, and applicable state and federal laws and regulations.

Must provide own hand tools as designated per trade specialty.

Bonus Points For

6–8 years experience as a production welder preferred.

Production welder experience while in the Navy or working as a civilian production welder supporting Navy ship repair or new construction.

Completion of a formal course of vocational or Navy welding training and certification.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes, no less than 30 lbs.

Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces.

May ride ships at sea for extended periods.

May require wearing a respirator.

Travel may be required within and outside the continental United States.
