Responsibilities

Provide routine and emergency care, treatment, and training for residents.

Assist with grooming, bathing, feeding, lifting, positioning, and medication administration.

Observe and report residents’ conditions and behaviors, documenting daily activities.

Engage residents in meaningful interactions and individualized training programs.

Implement habilitation, rehabilitation, behavior management, crisis intervention, and treatment plans.

Teach life skills such as feeding, dressing, and personal hygiene.

Participate in the development of individual treatment plans and home care services.

Administer first aid, CPR, and manage aggressive behavior.

Transport residents to scheduled activities and assist in emergencies.

Evacuate residents during emergencies or drills.

Maintain a safe and sanitary living environment; supervise and monitor the activities of other direct support staff.

MAY provide training/mentorship to new DSPs.

MAY serve as shift/team lead (“Charge”) or Home Supervisor, ensuring efficient operation of the home.

Participate in disaster response or continuity of operations plans when required.

Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of individual care techniques, treatment, therapy, and developmental programming.

Proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English.

Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills.

Decision‑making and good judgment during critical incidents.

Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies.

Demonstrate proper body mechanics, posture, and lifting techniques.

Perform first aid, CPR, and Safe Use of Restraint (SUR); Ukeru after training.

Train, mentor, and coach others.

Effective teamwork and collaboration.

Master basic individual care techniques.

Flexibility in handling work assignments.

Registrations, Licensure & Certifications

Valid Texas driver’s license, or ability to obtain it within 90 days of hire.

Out‑of‑state license holders must provide an original certified driving record.

Initial Screening Criteria

High School diploma, GED, or 6 months of work experience.

Preferred: One year of experience working with people who have mental health/intellectual developmental disabilities.

Preferred: Experience implementing behavior programs for persons with intellectual developmental disabilities.

Additional Information

Prefer experience writing reports.

Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and registry checks.

Male applicants 18‑25 must be registered with the Selective Service.

All state supported living center employees are subject to random drug testing.

Work may require overtime, extended hours, weekends, holidays, and some travel.

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
