The salary range for this position is $19.74 - $24.68 per hour. Placement within the range is based on experience and internal equity. For union positions, placement follows the collective bargaining agreement.

Responsibilities

Presents a friendly, approachable, professional demeanor and appearance.

Provides accurate information and timely updates to patients and customers. Addresses questions and concerns promptly or directs them to the appropriate person.

Uses effective service recovery skills to solve problems when they occur.

Demonstrates teamwork by helping co‑workers within and across departments. Communicates effectively, respects diverse opinions, and acknowledges contributions.

Uses organizational and unit resources efficiently.

Manages work schedule efficiently, completing tasks and assignments on time.

Contributes to continuous improvement opportunities and processes.

Participates in efforts to reduce costs and streamline work processes.

Rooms patients and provides direct patient care under supervision of a physician or RN/LPN. Records histories, medications, vital signs, and prepares patients for office procedures.

Explains treatment procedures and reinforces patient education regarding medication and testing.

Administers injections and medications as directed by a physician.

Performs point‑of‑care testing: venipuncture, urine dips, finger sticks, strep screens, flu screens, pregnancy tests, and cultures. Performs other office procedures such as EKGs, pulmonary testing, and chronic disease management testing independently.

Is knowledgeable about the purpose, process and results for tests and lab specimens frequently performed in an office setting.

Relays normal test results to patients or reads results verbatim from physician documentation. Consults an RN, LPN, or physician when patients have questions.

Maintains infection control standards, cleans and disinfects exam rooms, performs quality checks and troubleshoots instruments. Is knowledgeable of sterilization techniques and biological indicators.

Participates in shared governance, committee work, and practice/department projects.

Demonstrates proper identification and reporting of medical/health care errors.

Willing to support co‑workers, mentor and train new staff, and act as an integral team member.

Communicates appropriately and clearly with all staff and maintains a positive attitude.

Handles situations maturely and professionally.

Prioritizes and re‑prioritizes workflow, maintaining an organized workspace.

Engages in teamwork as a team player and builder.

Meets current standards and policies for documentation; provides timely, accurate, up‑to‑date, complete, and legible documentation.

Charges for all ancillary services performed.

Participates in ongoing educational activities; seeks formal and independent learning to maintain and develop clinical skills; shares knowledge with co‑workers.

Exhibits creativity and flexibility when change occurs.

Utilizes medical record and practice management systems for documentation, order entry, results, referrals, etc.

Stays informed of system updates and implements them in daily work.

Utilizes online resources efficiently (Outlook, Corridors, Team Sites).

Completes other duties as assigned.

Qualifications Required

Two or more years of recent experience working as a Medical Assistant in a physician office setting or completion of an accredited Medical Assisting Program.

High School Diploma or equivalent with two or more years of experience as a Medical Assistant or completion of an accredited Medical Assisting Program.

American Heart Association accredited Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification.

Completion of phlebotomy class or equivalent experience. Basic computer knowledge; ability to type proficiently and accurately. Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing. Capability to assess situations requiring an interpreter and to use interpreter services effectively.

New graduates/hires must obtain certification/registration within one year from hire date. Acceptable certifications:

Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) through American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)

Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) through American Medical Technologists (AMT)

National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) through the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)

Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) through the National Healthcareer Association (NHA)

Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA) through the National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP)

Active RN or LPN license in Illinois (accepted in lieu of CMA certification)

Preferred

Associate’s degree in Medical Assisting.

Proficiency in a second language.
