Patient Access Representative 1 - ED (7a-7p)
FMOL Health is seeking a dedicated Patient Access Representative 1 (PAR 1) for its Emergency Department. The role is responsible for accurately registering patients presenting to the ED, including trauma, stroke, disaster response, behavioral health, direct admits, surgery, radiology, and prisoners. Activities include validating patient identity, collecting screening information, coordinating with nurses, verifying insurance coverage, calculating and collecting co‑insurance/deductibles/co‑pays, determining in‑network status, and balancing cash. The PAR 1 operates in a fast‑paced, high‑stress environment, communicating professionally with patients, families, physicians, nurses, and EMS.
Responsibilities
Register patients in the ED, ensuring accurate demographic and insurance data input.
Verify insurance eligibility and obtain authorizations; select correct plans in registration software.
Calculate patient financial responsibility using payment estimator software; communicate details to patients.
Collect patient co‑insurance/deductibles/co‑pays and cash; balance cash drawers; print receipts.
Document each encounter in account notes for cross‑functional communication.
Coordinate trauma, stroke and heart alerts to ensure timely triage.
Manage patient and visitor concerns during active trauma or disaster events.
Ensure compliance with federal and state regulations (EMTALA, HIPAA, Balanced Billing Act, No Surprises Act, etc.).
Respond to disaster activation and work on site until activation concludes.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
1 year customer service experience or related certification (e.g., Certified Coder, Certified Medical Assistant).
High School diploma or equivalent.
Advanced clerical and computer skills; critical thinking; ability to work in high‑stress situations.
Professional appearance and behavior; good communication skills; dependability; flexibility; teamwork.
