Reporting to the Mechanical Supervisor, the Mechanical Lead is an integral team member of the company’s Operations and Mechanical team. The Mechanical Lead will be mainly responsible for the execution of maintenance and operating plans for the company’s equipment and facilities at the desired work location.
This position is deemed Safety Sensitive and pre‑employment testing will be required. This position requires you to periodically access an active railway area where impaired performance could result in a significant incident affecting the health and safety of team members, guests, the public, property, or the environment.
Key Areas of Accountability
Lead maintenance and servicing of equipment
Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair rail car and locomotive components, interior and exterior
Provide leadership to workplace safety by role modeling appropriate behavior and enforcing safety rules
Provide on‑job coaching and guidance to other team members and contractors
Utilize workforce resources effectively
Support investigations and corrective action plans for workplace incidents
Operate handbrakes, couple air hoses, disconnect / connect HEP cables and water lines, operate track switches / derails
Provide timely, accurate reporting to team members and partners
Support train movements of passenger rail equipment on site when required
Troubleshoot diverse equipment types and support cross‑functional trade defect repairs
Willingness to participate in personal development company initiatives
Safety
Comply with all Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), General Code of Operating Rules (GCOR), General Operating Instructions (GOI), host railway rules / requirements and all other safety policies, procedures, and safety rules
Identify, protect, and report safety hazards to management and OH&S Committee
Meet or exceed safety and security requirements
Maintain basic first aid level provided by the company
Maintain a clean and safe work area
Operations
Support the successful execution of the Operating Plan
Support safe movement of rail equipment
Execute the company’s materials handling strategy
Support operational and equipment availability requirements
Support 5S Lean methodology to seek continuous improvement efficiencies
This position may require the ability to train for and perform switching duties
Mechanical
Read, understand, and interpret schematics, manuals and other instructions about equipment
Train for the use of equipment and hand toolsExecute a successful Maintenance Program
Ensure completion of work orders maintaining brand standards, working collaboratively with team members and contractors
Execute mechanical and reliability requirements
Respond to service failures; as required
All other duties as assigned
Qualifications Education, Certification, Licenses
High School Diploma
Valid Driver's License and clean driving record
Qualification and / or proven knowledge in safe heavy equipment operations such as forklifts, cranes, etc.
Qualification and / or proven knowledge in safe small hand tool handling such as grinders, drills, etc.
Journeyman or Master Trade Qualification, an asset
Previous Qualification under Railway Operating Rules, an asset
First Aid Certification, an asset
Experience / Skills
Understanding of mechanical systems such as electrical and refrigeration
Experience in fabrication, welding, and millwork is an asset
Previous locomotive maintenance experience and railcar maintenance experience, an asset
Previous railroad experience, an asset
Familiarity with 480VAC 3 phase electrical systems, an asset
Strong coordination and organizational skills
High attention to detail with a desire to maintain brand standards
Able to take personal accountability, be adaptable, and be a problem solver
Familiarity with computer applications
Good communication and leadership skills
Able to work cross‑functionally
High mechanical aptitude
Work Environment
Will require frequent‑weekly travel
Work and travel destinations could include Moab, Utah and Salt Lake City, Utah
Hours worked per day range from 10 hours – 12 hours
Physical demands may require lifting to 80 lbs. on occasion
Rail industrial site that requires walking and sitting throughout the day
24 / 7 operation that may require varied work schedules
Indoor / outdoor working environment
Salary (Seasonal) $36.05 an hour
