Environmental Health & Safety Data Management Specialist (Hybrid)

Position Summary Provides training, support and guidance to the research community regarding collection of information necessary to maintain compliance with federal, state, and local environmental and safety regulations. Frequent use of the environmental data management software tool (EHS Assist) is required. Familiarity with chemical properties, relational database design, DOT segregation principles, IBC requirements, and proper chemical storage is required. The position involves interviewing database users, communicating enhancements to the software vendor, and attending applicable regulatory training. A flexible schedule that may include evenings and weekends is required.
Job Description Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Assist researchers and lab personnel with chemical inventory data and provide support as needed.
Provide technical support for the EHS Assist environmental data management software tool.
Communicate with the software vendor and EH&S staff regarding enhancements or technical issues.
Update IBC, DOT regulations and other compliance‑related chemical information in EHS Assist.
Monitor chemical purchase order information.
Generate and run routine reports from existing databases (EHS Assist, Excel).
Complete paperwork and enter information into computer programs/databases as defined by policy.
Use EHS Assist for writing queries and creating reports with the report builder tool.
Interpret conditions encountered, recognize when issues exceed procedures, and raise them to managers or the supervisor. Interact with WashU Medicine physicians, researchers, technicians, and laboratory personnel as a representative of EH&S.
Working Conditions Job Location
Position is primarily located in a standard office environment.
Maintain a flexible work schedule to accommodate varied timelines and task priorities.
May include occasional evening and weekend work.
Physical Effort
Other duties may occur in laboratories, health care and waste management environments where hazardous materials are used, stored, and/or disposed of.
Applicants must be physically able to walk to many locations each day and have the agility and dexterity to survey fairly inaccessible locations.
Must be able to lift and move up to 20 pounds and carry portable equipment.
Equipment
Other tasks, duties, and projects may be assigned related to one or more technical areas of EH&S’s Safety Program.
Education Required: Associate degree.
Preferred: Bachelor’s degree or combination of education and/or experience may substitute for minimum education.
Required Qualifications Associate degree.
Certifications / Professional Licenses No specific certification or professional license is required.
Work Experience No specific work experience is required.
