Clinical Dietitian Part Time Days Detroit Medical Center

Reports to the Director, DMC Nutrition Services. Conducts a nutrition assessment for all patients identified at nutritional risk to determine an appropriate plan of nutrition therapy that meets their assessed needs.

The assessment includes evaluation of patients medical history, medication/herbal supplement history, anthropometric measurement, assessment of lab values, diet history, age‑specific factors, cultural and religious practices, and barriers to learning such as physical, emotional, language, cognitive and motivation.

Nutrition Care Plans are developed and include requirements for nutrients and nutrition education as appropriate.

The assessment is completed using a multi‑disciplinary approach with input from medical staff, nursing, speech‑language pathology, and other appropriate hospital personnel, and is recorded in patient records using DMC‑approved documentation.

Resource person for hospital personnel and medical staff regarding nutrition; participates in multidisciplinary rounds and provides education on nutrition related topics.

Researches and develops programs for dietetic interns; participates in education of interns by providing specialized and general nutrition instruction.

Participates in research projects and nutrition‑related programs.

Works with outside agencies to obtain ongoing assistance for patients as appropriate.

Maintains hospital and departmental policies, procedures, objectives, process improvement and provides input on improving processes and quality of patient care.

Inventory and orders office and tube‑feeding supplies.

Monitors and directs foodservice personnel to ensure provision of optimal nutritional food service to patients; follows up with patients to ensure adherence to dietary regimen.

Formulates special recipes or plans to meet specific needs of patients.

Promotes guest relations and maintains good customer service by providing assistance to customers promptly and courteously.

Promotes the value of DMC by demonstrating behaviors supportive of quality, community welfare, respect, teamwork, communication, innovation, education, and effective resource use.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Nutrition/Dietetics.

Dietetic internship in a healthcare setting or completion of a supervised practice program at a health care facility, community agency, or food‑service corporation; programs are usually 6 to 12 months in length.

Registration with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics or a registry‑eligible exam taken within 6 months of completion of internship.

Registration with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics required if working with patients with inherited metabolic disorders.
