Job Overview Direct Support Professional II — Austin State Supported Living Center, Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC). This role is part of the Sunrise - Residential Care department, providing routine and emergency care, treatment, and training for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The position operates on multiple sites with Morning, Evening, and Night shifts.

Location and Schedule 2203 W 35TH ST, AUSTIN, TX 78703 Shift: Evening (with options for Days, Nights, and Weekends). Telework not eligible. Up to 5% travel required.

Key Responsibilities

Provide direct personal care and health support, including grooming, bathing, feeding, and medication monitoring.

Implement habilitation, rehabilitation, behavior management, crisis intervention, and treatment programs.

Teach life skills such as feeding, dressing, and personal hygiene.

Observe and document individuals’ physical condition, behavior changes, and incidents.

Assist transport to scheduled activities and emergencies, administer first aid, and provide CPR as needed.

Evacuate individuals during emergencies and participate in disaster response and Continuity of Operations (COOP) plans.

Perform desk duties such as record‑keeping and routine reporting.

Train, mentor, or serve as a shift or team lead for new DSPs.

Drive a state-owned vehicle if required by the position.

Other duties assigned by supervisors.

Essential Job Functions

Attend work regularly and adhere to assigned or rotating shift schedules, including extended shift and overtime as needed.

Document observations, report significant changes, and maintain accurate records.

Assist with transportation, first aid, and medical needs under supervision.

Support emergency evacuation and crisis response efforts.

Provide direct care and support services to individuals.

Participate in agency disaster response or COOP activities when required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)

Speak and read English.

Make decisions and use good judgment during critical incidents.

React quickly and calmly in emergencies.

Demonstrate proper body mechanics, posture, and lifting techniques.

Understand individual care techniques and therapeutic programs.

Administer first aid or CPR, perform Ukeru (once trained), and conduct Safe Use of Restraint (SUR).

Communicate effectively, train, mentor, and coach others.

Work effectively as a team member.

Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications Valid Texas driver’s license or ability to obtain within 90 days. Preferred CPR, First Aid, Ukeru, and/or Safe Use of Restraint (SUR) certification.

Initial Screening Criteria High School diploma or equivalent, or relevant previous employment experience.

Preferred Qualifications

At least 6 months of related work experience.

Experience in writing reports.

Experience in behavior programs for individuals with intellectual developmental disabilities.

Experience working with people who have mental health or intellectual developmental disabilities.

Additional Information Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and mandatory registry checks, including CANRS, Nurse Aide, Medication Aide, Employee Misconduct, and LEIE. Males 18‑25 must register with the Selective Service. Random drug testing applies. Flexibility for overtime, extended hours, weekends, and holidays is required.
