Qualifications
Education – Minimum: Bachelor’s degree in human development and family studies, child and family studies or a related field.
Credentials/Licensure – Minimum: Certified Child Life Specialist (CCLS).
Experience – Minimum: Completed Clinical Internship with a minimum of 600 hours. Preferred: Clinical experience in a healthcare setting.
Responsibilities
Supporting children and families by using a variety of tactics to help the patient better understand a process, procedure, or other element of their medical stay.
Creating developmentally appropriate strategies to minimize trauma and increase understanding of a medical diagnosis or process through treatment plans using therapeutic play, education, preparation, and activities.
Advocating for the needs of children and their families on an individualized basis.
Supporting therapeutic strategies for those with cognitive impairments or developmental delays to provide equitable care.
Actively participating as a member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team, integrating plans to promote optimal patient care that is family‑centered, developmentally appropriate, culturally sensitive, and psychosocially mindful.
Reviewing and assisting with care plans for identified patients requiring additional resources during their hospital stay.
Providing information, support, and guidance to parents and family members.
Non‑direct patient care tasks, such as presenting learning opportunities to members of the health‑care team to educate on best approaches, appropriate interventions, and communication strategies.
Being a resource for Trinity Health Grand Rapids to help any pediatric or other patient that would benefit from Child Life Services.
Coordinating education and maintaining therapeutic supplies.
Performing other related duties as assigned.
