Responsibilities
Practice preventive lifeguard techniques at all times, including maintaining a full view of the area of responsibility above and below the water surface; ensuring the area is no wider than 180 degrees; scanning the area every 5 to 10 seconds; and contacting a victim within 10 seconds.
Remain within 2 feet of the pool at all times and perform appropriate rescues.
Administer First Aid, CPR, AED, or O2 as necessary.
Report any problems or hazards with the facility and staff incidents to the Aquatic Director/Coordinator when immediate actions cannot fix the problem.
Inform Aquatics Director/Coordinator when there is a situation in which the pool is unsafe or when mechanical problems arise.
Supervise Aquatic Staff in the absence of the Aquatic Director/Coordinator to ensure all facility policies are enforced and observed.
Ensure pump room operations, chemical levels, water clarity, and chlorine/acid tanks are at appropriate levels and standards within the scope of training/certification.
Interact in a professional and positive manner with members and participants, treating them fairly and equally in person and over the phone.
Resolve problems with members and participants as best as possible or inform the Aquatics Director/Coordinator if not resolved in a timely manner.
Use visual and auditory skills to detect critical incidents and the physical ability to act swiftly in emergency situations.
Observe participants’ activities, enforce safety regulations, and apply appropriate policies and procedures.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum age of 18 years.
Minimum 2 years experience as a lifeguard.
Current YMCA or American Red Cross Lifeguard Training (must transfer to YMCA within 6 months).
Current First Aid for Public Safety Personnel certification from one of the following: American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or American Safety and Health Institute.
Current CPR PRO/AED certification from one of the following: American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or American Safety and Health Institute.
Current O2 certification from one of the following: American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or American Safety and Health Institute.
Current CPO certification within 60 days of employment.
Previous experience in supervision of staff preferred.
Must pass written and practical skills assessment prior to duty.
Perform other duties as assigned.
