The Role This position is for job seekers with no trades experience willing to complete two weeks of unpaid training in the Outside Machinist trade or for job seekers with a certificate in a related trades field. We offer a
$500 sign‑on bonus
and, for new hires living 50 miles or greater from Newport News, VA, a

The Outside Machinist will install, maintain, test, and repair a ship’s major mechanical components and systems such as steam turbines, reduction gears, propellers, reactor components, catapults, weapons systems, periscopes, and shipboard life‑support equipment. Work is performed in varied environments on naval vessels during construction, overhaul, or repair.
Qualifications & Requirements
Must be able to pass a 2‑week (UNPAID) program (80 hours) or present a certificate/diploma in Outside Machining or a related field.
Must be willing to undergo a background investigation and drug screen.
Must be able to pass a physical agility test.
Must be able to kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, and climb daily.
Must be able to lift at least 40 pounds and perform overhead work.
Must be willing to work overtime and any shift.
Must be clean‑shaven to wear a respirator.
Must be able to work outdoors year‑round in all weather conditions, at extreme heights, and in small, tight, confined spaces.
