Acute Care Surgical Services is a nationally recognized AACN Sliver Beacon 28 bed inpatient unit and Center of Bariatric Excellence providing care for Surgical Oncology, Plastic Surgery, Microsurgery, Bariatric Surgery, Colo-Rectal Surgery and Urology patients. This diverse unit includes general and progressive level of care beds and provides the highest quality care for a broad spectrum of surgical diseases including the most critically ill and injured patients. VCU Medical Center is the only Level I Trauma Center in the region verified by the State of Virginia and the American College of Surgeons for Adult, Pediatric, and Burn trauma. The Unit Secretary performs a variety of clerical tasks involved in preparing, maintaining and processing patient and unit activities, data and records.
Responsibilities
Perform daily clerical tasks with minimal supervision.
Manage patient and unit records, data and activity processing.
Handle, transport, access to and/or contact with medications and related supplies.
Report any policy or procedure violations to the Nurse Manager promptly.
Maintain office systems, organizational tools and medical terminology records.
Assist with medical insurance, MIS and EMR documentation.
Work all three shifts, weekends and holidays with scheduled rotations.
Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED (required). Completion of a Medical Terminology course (preferred).
Previous experience setting up and maintaining office systems (organizational skills).
Previous experience with medical insurance, MIS, and medical terminology.
Previous experience in a health care setting.
Previous experience with Microsoft Office software.
Previous experience with use of EMR.
Physical and Mental Requirements Physical: Lifting up to 50 lbs. Activities: Prolonged standing, prolonged sitting, frequent bending, walking (distance), repetitive motion.
Mental/Sensory: Strong recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, speak clearly, write legibly, reading, logical thinking.
Emotional: Able to handle multiple priorities, frequent and intense customer interactions, noisy environment, adapt to frequent change.
