Description The Patient Access Representative (Rep) is the fully cross-functional level of the Patient Access Services (PAS) career path. The PAS Rep performs all Patient Access Services functions as outlined below.
Responsibilities
Perform all outpatient and inpatient registration functions including hospital cashiering and insurance verification.
Ensure that patients meet financial requirements.
Provide general information to hospital users, patients and families.
Communicate effectively to service delivery areas to maximize patient flow and customer service.
Provide excellent patient-focused customer service.
Functional Areas
Customer Service/Information Desk
Up‑front collections/cashier
Emergency Department registration
Outpatient registration
Outpatient surgery and special procedure
Cath lab registration
Inpatient & observation registration
Insurance verification
Bed control
Physical Effort
Sitting 3–4 hours, standing 3–4 hours, walking 3–4 hours.
Moderate lifting of 20–25 pounds, 1–10 times per day.
Moderate bending, squatting and kneeling.
Frequent fine‑motor movement with both hands; manual dexterity to utilize computer.
Good visual and hearing discrimination.
Moderate lack of control over pace of work and high level of interaction with patients and employees throughout the day.
Mental Effort / Desired Skills
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Detail orientation.
Good deductive reasoning.
Public empathy for patients.
Collaborates with others; strong team builder.
Accepts authority and follows instructions well.
Qualifications
High school graduate or equivalent. Medical terminology preferred.
Pass a clerical examination with typing speed of 25–30 words per minute.
Pass internal examinations to demonstrate mastery of Patient Access Services computer applications.
Previous experience in hospital admissions, business office, and/or physician’s office preferred.
Must become certified in all Patient Access Services functions within 1 year of hire.
Must pass internal certification examinations to demonstrate understanding of overall competencies.
Safety‑sensitive: NO (cannabis use disqualifies).
