Overview We are offering a 12‑month UNC Health Rex Nurse Residency program designed to support new graduate nurses as they transition from academia to clinical practice. The program provides structured clinical orientation, classroom sessions focused on unit‑specific skills, continuing education, a group evidence‑based practice project, and regular milestones and check‑ins with unit leadership.
Program Details Spring/Summer New Graduate Nurses
– upcoming start dates are May 2026 through August 2026, with additional dates based on graduation and NCLEX dates.
Additional Purposes and Goals
of the program include:
Increase proficiency – from novice to competent nurse
Promote evidence‑based practice at the bedside to ensure best patient outcomes
Develop clinical leadership skills at the point of care

Qualifications New Graduate Nurse:
Graduation from a school of professional nursing
and licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina by the start of clinical care. Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification required. Candidates who are nursing students in the final semester, within 12 months of graduation, or who have worked less than 6 months as an RN are eligible.
Benefits: Eligible for up to $25,000 tuition loan forgiveness or $10,000 Commitment Incentive, plus up to $5,000 relocation assistance based on location.
Unit Description – UNC Rex 4 East 31‑bed pulmonary and nephrology intermediate care unit. Nurses care for patients with lung, kidney, and heart‑related illnesses, monitor ventilators, peritoneal dialysis, arrhythmias, and cardiac drips. The team emphasizes critical thinking and a wide range of clinical skills for patients with multiple comorbidities.
Responsibilities
Identify and meet learning needs of self; attend education programs and use patient education materials.
Identify expected patient outcomes; revise plan of care with guidance; discuss patient care with interdisciplinary team; communicate relevant information to promote continuity of care.
Perform bedside point‑of‑care testing; utilize nursing standards, policies, and procedures; prioritize care based on patient/family needs; consult resources for complex issues.
Develop professional growth goals with supervisor; achieve or renegotiate goals; collaborate on unit goals and performance improvement; promote cost‑effective care and a safe hospital environment.
Recognize data from complex situations to determine care priorities; synthesize assessment data for communication.
Collaborate with patient/family on care planning; utilize multidisciplinary resources; address cultural and ethnic issues; prioritize tasks for complex patients.
Read relevant journals; bring practices and ideas to staff meetings.
Education & Experience Requirements
Graduation from a school of professional nursing.
No prior experience required.
Licensure & Certification
Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina by the day of clinical care.
Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification.
Professional Experience No prior experience required.
